Lamar's Story

My family and I were fortunate enough to move to Las Cruces around 1970-71 from Texas (I KNOW......Texas???....really??....) and I spent my junior and senior years at LCHS. I remember having an almost entirely wonderful experience during those two years, thanks to a very friendly and accepting group of people who took in a somewhat shy (unless you got to know me well) guy whose main distinctions were a complete obsession with music collecting, interests in history and writing and a completely unorthodox way of walking! That last bit was due to my Cerebral Palsy. One of the best compliments I got regularly was that people noticed I was handicapped for about the first 30 seconds and then it was forgotten!!! I also especially remember working on the Bulldog Reminder with la Tannia Pembrook and Col. Frank and the rest of the gang!!! I was the kind of guy that enjoyed interacting with many folks during the day to day but getting really close and in depth with very few. I also cherished being a good listener when needed -- because, alas, I was usually the comfortable, "safe" guy friend for a small number of very interesting and beautiful young women who needed a guy friend to talk with and not have to have their guard up! I was usually smart enough at the time to understand how special those times were for me! Hopefully, the ladies felt appreciated and listened to and felt better for talking w...Expand for more
ith me! After graduation I went right into NMSU, transferred for a while to UT at Austin and then came back to NMSU to graduate in English literature. Well, at least I enjoyed myself --- hahahaha! With somewhat limited employment prospects, I eventually got into a Master's program back at UT Austin in Library Science (again, oh the money I made.....hahahahaha). However I will be forever grateful for that particular choice, because while there I met the love of my life and soon to be spouse in the co-ed grad school dorm there at the grad student dinner table -- happily, we met while I was sitting at the table eating and she thought I was interesting and engaging well before I had to stand up and walk -- (just kidding!) She has had the strength and good grace to put up with all my peculiarities and generally male idiocy for over 30 years now. We now live in a lovely, scenic area of the Oregon coast and enjoy life here very much. I just have to be careful what I say sometimes, because we live in an area that has a large number of Fox News zombie types who are perfectly nice until they find out I'm not one of them!!! (oops-- did I just alienate some folks reading this??) I'm hearing of a new rehab center in Arizona for folks who have lost the capacity to think or speak without Fox News talking points! (wink, wink!) Remember -- there IS life after Limbaugh! Cheers, and thanks for listening!
