Lamount Lane Dais, 33(now i'm 41), has been a nurse's assistant, a hospital inventory operator, a barber and a warehouse worker. Last year, he reinvented himself yet again -- this time, as Lamount, the Human Volcano -- and got a lot closer to his dream. He performs three nights a week at Amphitheatre, a nightclub in Ybor City, doing fire stunts for a living.
But mostly, for applause.

I've always been the funny guy. Anything to get me a little crowd. I played football in high school, nothing artistic. We were middle class, regular-type people. No circus-type stuff.

ore I was a fire performer, I was just some guy. I didn't get a lot of respect as a young black guy in this world. Everybody wants to be loved, to be recognized. Mine, I think, is an extreme.
On my quest to be famous, I had to find something. At first, I was going to start as a stand-up comedian. And (then) my mentor said: "What is it that you love to do?" I said, "I love to play with fire."
Fire is everything. This world probably started as a fireball. We couldn't have these shoes, this couch without it. We couldn't sterilize. Even though we use it all the time, we don't understand it. Without fire, we're nothing.
It took me five minutes to learn how to eat fire. You'd be surprised how easy it is. I had two torches and . . . I hit Ybor City. Everything else came after that: using a fire staff, fire juggling, poi (an ancient Peruvian martial art that involves a chain and a fireball), just many fire manipulations, like setting my nipple on fire, my hand on fire. You can only take it about three seconds. I'd say 80 percent of my shows, I get burned. I had my face catch fire five times. Once, the flames came back (at me) and burned my ear. My right eyebrow was singed.
I make my own costumes. It's a beautiful feeling to express yourself -- and get paid for it. I do".
