Lana's Story

Life I retired in May 2003 after a 32-yr career in high-tech, ending with 5.5 years in database design at Amazon.com (got in just as the ".com bubble" was rising -- can you say "stock options"?). I decided finally to finish that music degree I started just out of high school, and after 3 years graduated from Seattle Pacific University in June 2006, majoring in conducting, composition, and voice. I went on to do a M.Mus. in Mus. History & Literature at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA, where I currently live. Married 1971; divorced 1988. Lived all over -- South Carolina (1977), Washington, D.C. area (1978-1981), and San Francisco area(1981-1997). Started singing seriously in 1993, made professional opera debut in 1996 (Dolcina in Suor Angelica; Marcellina in La Nozze di Figaro). I moved to Seattle from the San Francisco Bay area to take the job at Amazon.com in 1997, and I really love the Pacific NW. Amazon was a wonderful company to work for, but after 5+ years of 60-70-hr work weeks, I was ready to move on. I own a condo in Bellingham, WA (where I attended grad school) which is currently inhabited by my brother, Lowell, and his wife. I currently live as an independent resident in an assisted living facility after a few fairly major health issues: a brain tumor in 2014, pulmonary embolism in 2020; avoided COVID, thank heavens, but have some breathing issues). Before the health issues kicked in, I did a lot of traveling -- smaller cruise ships mostly -- Alaska, the Arctic (Greenland, Iceland, Norway), Central and South America, and the South Pacific. I was on a 131-day World Cruise in 2020 when the pandemic hit and the cruise ended in Perth, Australia, after only 51 days. Currently, I read a lot, am fairly active in a local P.E.O. chapter, enjoy crafts projects of various sorts and almost always have 2 or 3 in varying degrees of completion. School When I think of Ruskin, I think of Mr. Tarry, the choir director. He was amazing, totally dedicated, and influenced me more than he could ever have known. I had him for Music Appreciation and Music Theory as well. He opened up the world of choral music and for that I'll be forever grateful. I also think about Mr. Wrisinger, the school paper, and the Categories team. Great fun -- and I really learned how to write in his class. Those were the experiences that made high school worth it. Apart from those, it was pretty dismal, and I wouldn't repeat the experience under any circumstances. College After one horrendous year at Wi...Expand for more
lliam Woods College (now William Woods University) 1969-1970, I dropped out and got married a year later. I put my now-ex-husband through college at KU and took the occasional night class. I had a few classes at KU, and a few more at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. I finally returned to college full time in fall 2003 at Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, WA. I graduated in June 2006 with a degree in music (composition, conducting and voice), and I attended grad school at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. Workplace I started working shortly after I left William Woods in 1970 -- initially in payroll accounting (my dad was an accountant, and I had worked for him all through high school). I started working as a civilian at Ft. Leavenworth in the fall of 1971. Took the FSEE, and got into the Career Intern Program for data processing in 1972. That's where I got most of my training in programming, systems analysis and design, etc. I was transferred to Ft. Jackson, SC, in 1975, and then to Ft. Belvoir, VA, in 1977. Got more training in project management, and moved up the career ladder into various management positions. Left federal service in 1981 to move to San Francisco and Bank of America. Finally ended up in Silicon Valley in 1985, when I went to work for Apple Computer doing database design. Eventually worked all over Silicon Valley -- Silicon Graphics, Intel, Bay Networks, and finally Stanford University. In 1997, I was "recruited" by Amazon.com to start up their database design group, so I moved from San Francisco Bay area (Half Moon Bay) to the Seattle area. I started at Amazon when there were about 650 employees; when I left in 2003, there were over 14,000. It was a great gig -- a wonderful company, extremely talented people. The stock options weren't too shabby, either. When it became obvious that I no longer needed to work for a living, I decided it was time to return to school and finish the degree I'd started in 1969. I retired on June 1, 2003, and started classes on September 27, 2003. (See "School" above for the rest.) I'm totally happy with how things have turned out. I wouldn't change anything -- my marriage, my divorce, my job choices, etc. That doesn't mean I haven't made some mistakes, but I believe the important thing is to learn from those and move on. I don't believe in regrets -- things happen for a reason, and I've learned a lot about myself and others in the process. If I died tomorrow, I would still consider my life well lived.
