Larnell's Story

Military CWO2 Larnell G. Mills entered the Marine Corps on the 14th day of June, 1988. Upon completion of Recruit Training, MCRD San Diego, California, he reported to Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense (NBCD) School, Ft. McClellan Alabama for MOS training as a 5711 (NBC Defense Specialist). Upon completion of his MOS school, he was assigned to 3d FSSG Okinawa, Japan where he extended his tour of duty and in 1989, was meritoriously promoted to Cpl and deployed ISO Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Upon returning from the Gulf War, he was ordered to 1st MAW, where he served approximately (2) years with MACS-1. Sgt Mills later reported to 1st Marine Division where he served with HQ Bn at the Division NBCD Platoon. After being deployed to Somalia, he was transferred to 1st Bn, 1st Marine Regiment where he completed (2) West Pack UDP tours as the NBCD Chief, and attended several infantry related courses. After being selected to the rank of SSgt in 1996, he was reassigned to the Regimental Enhanced Training Section as an augment instructor. Just prior to promotion, he was reassigned to 3d Amphibian Assault Bn where he served as the NBCD Officer. In August 1997, SSgt Mills executed accompanied orders to 3d MAW Okinawa, Japan where he served approximately (2) years with MWSS-172 as the unit NBCD Officer. He was later reassigned to MWSG-17 as the NBCD Chief. After extending his tour of duty in Okinawa, in 2000, he requested orders to 3d Marine Division where he was assigned as the NBCD Officer for HQ Bn. In Aug 2001, he was reassigned to 3d Bn, 12th Marines where he served as the NBCD Officer and Regimental OIC of MCMAP. His wife, Heather, also served as KV coordinator for HQ Battery where she received a Letter of Recognition from the Battalion Commander. vision Schools, GySgt Mills served in numerous billets at once, due to the War in Iraq. His billets included: Operations Chief, Chief Instructor of the MCMAP, Chief Instructor of the Cpl´s Leadership Course, and MIMMS Instructor. While with 3d Marine Division Schools, he traveled to places such as Thailand, Mongolia, and Russia during Martial Arts exhibitions with allied countries and to train the Marines at the embassies. In Feb 2005, upon being promoted to WO, he reported to The Basic School in Quantico Virginia for PME. Upon completion of TBS, he attended the NBCD Officer´s Course in Ft. Leonardwood Missouri. His 1st duty assignment as a WO was with 1st Bn 7th Marines where he served briefly as the NBCD Officer. Due to constant activity in Iraq, within months he was reassigned to 7th Marines as the Regimental CBRN Officer. While with the Regiment, he spent (12) months deployed ISO Operation OIF as the Senior Watch Officer for the Regimental COC. During his time in Iraq, he was responsible for 12 United States maneuver battalions (both Army and Marine Corps) as well as Iraqi Security Forces. He also supported outside agencies such as Special Forces, Force Recon, DEA, FBI, and CIA with information and QRF support. Shortly after completion of the deployment, on 25 April 2007, CWO Mills reported to HQ Btry, 3d Bn 11th Marines where he serves as the HQ Btry Commander as well as the Bn CBRN Defense Officer.
