Larry's Story

Life In 1977 I married my Wife Janet (Laura) From South Rockwood. In 79 we started raising our family of 4 children- 2 boys 2 girls Bethany Adrian Elise and Adam. We have lived in Wyandotte the whole time. When I First Got Married I was a Toolmaker till 1989 Then I joined The Wyandotte Fire Department where i still work, 8 years till retirement. My job there is Engineer (drive and operate the Fire Trucks). A couple of times a year i read to children at school on special days. The Kids always ask what my favorite thing i do at work is, the answer truthfully is driving the Trucks-I say with a smile. About 3 yrs ago i was diognosed with cancer. Treatment was real fun by the way but so far so good. the next spring my oldest son asked me to help him start a Lawn business so not knowing how much longer i would be here i thought i would do this for him. So after 1 yr he quit that and now i have a lawn service and work about 80 hrs a week in the summer ( thanks alot Adrian). But I still Manage to play softball every week and a couple of times I have gone down to Lakeland and Played Ball at Tiger Fantasy camp, pretty cool. My wife and I bought a 2003 Honda Goldwing, candy red. we have taken a few trips on that, Boston, the U P and a Trip all the way around the hand. I also love being in the U P. Two Places yhat are my favorite are Agate falls near Bruce Crossing and Sylvania Recreation Area. catch and release only no live bait and no Motors. I listen to the loons every night. we have seen many eagles ans have actually had one come within 5 ft of the canoe once, i guess he was pretty hungry. We have seen wolves. otters and have caught so many big bass that our arms hurt after a few days. We Have a few Dogs Mine are Labs, a yellow and a black, Sammy and Toby. My career at the Fire Dept has been good. The Biggest thing ...Expand for more
I bring to the dept is that nothing happens when I work. God has been good to me. The Hot shots don't Like working with me because its too boring. The Chief says that peoples lighters don't even work when I'm on, one friend there says I save Lives just by comming to work, I like that one the Best. Two days stand out in my career, one at both ends of the spectrum. I have delivered a baby once and that was pretty special. There is also a Family that belives that i was their Angel one day when i was off Duty getting ready for a trip on the Bike that day and as I was comming home from gassing up the Bike and around the corner from my house i saw a car up on the lawn. Then I saw my Wife franticly waving me over, I pulled up not seeing anything when Jan almost threw me off the Bike and I made my way around the car to find a Little Boy who had been completly run over and was behind the car in very bad shape. I was the First help on scene. The Boy was airlifted to U of M and was there within an hour. When the rescue left with him we walked home. The family looked up and i was gone. Hence I must have been an angel, the truth is that God puts us where he needs us. After that day i never asked myself how or why I ended up a firefighter, on that day when he looked me in the eyes and asked me if he was gonna die their needed to be someone there that could make him belive that I wasn't gonna let him die and I didn't. He has had many surgeries since then and he is doing pretty good today. My Family is healthy, My kids are doing good and I have a good life. At times it was a rough road with a lot of changes to come but hey thats what life is about, Changes. Like I said earlier God has been good to me- I have been very blessed. May we meet again and good luck to you all. Larry
