Larry's Story

Life Ran Cross Country and track for BW, graduated in '77. Still running after all these years, 5-6 days per week and still lifting weight 3 days a week as well. Refuse to give in to age. Worked at UPS for 7 yrs before quitting to join the Navy. Always wanted to be a fighter pilot and was lucky enough to do so for 21 yrs before retiring. Flew F-14s on and off ships for three sea tours (each 3 yrs in length) , was an F-14 instructor pilot for two shore tours, was the F-14 airshow pilot for 3 yrs, was a TOPGUN guy, did a tour at USSPACE COMMAND in Cheyenne MTN in CO SPRGS and Commanded a Joint Flying Squadron (USAF, USN, and USMC) in Oklahoma. Retired from the Navy and now fly for Southwest Airlines. My landings are much different nowadays than when I was hitting a pitching moving flight deck. I became "Splash" after ejecting from an A-4 during a catapult launch in 83. I impacted the water before my parachute opened and then was run over by the aircraft carrier...not a good day, but since I survived, perhaps it was my best day. So I have been known as Splash ever since. Only those at JMH know my real name. I flew combat in Lybia, Lebannon, 58 missions during Desert Storm, a yr's worth in Bosnia and then back to Iraq. Getting shot at by very big things is not all that much fun, but it does get the adrenaline going. I married Mary Ann Winterich, class '74, 30 yrs ago. My bride and I remain best friends still today and somehow seem to avoid many of the pitfalls which plague many couples. She has always been the best part of my life. Two kids, both married. Crystal is 29, a full time Mom and lives with her hubby in NC. She was a 6th grade teacher for 7 yrs before trading professions. Through them we have become grandparents...even more fun than being a parent although that was a blast too. Josh is 24 and was flying jets in the Navy when he was medically removed due to Crohns Disease. Although his lifelong dream has come to an end, he is looking for a new path to follow and ho...Expand for more
pes to get into the intel community or the teaching profession. Bell bottoms, long hair, hip huggers...all things we did once, but doubt will ever do again even if they do come back in style. Unfortunately, pictures exist which prove we were without fashion sense, at least within the male gender. The gals? They looked great in mini skirts, dresses, and nylons. It was a great time to be a guy and hopefully a gal as well. Kids actually cared how they looked when they went to school. Checking out the gals every single day was a thing worth getting out of bed for and made school a fun place in which to spend the day. To all the JMH gals who woke up early and looked the best they could, we guys thank you. How have I changed? Even more laid back and appreciative of the diversity which everyone has to offer. I enjoy the arts, and yes, although I am a die hard classic rocker, I do enjoy country music these days as well as piano and violin music. I enjoy watching people with talent perform, especially people with voice. What am I most proud of? No question, my family. I am fortunate to be a part of a very fun group whom share a blood line. I would like to spend time with them even if we were not related. Hobbies? I have three passions; working out (running, lifting, whatever), flying (thankfully I get paid to do that), and my family. Books are my fetish and I find a bookstore more fun than a candystore. I do read every single day of my life and am never bored as long as there is a book around. Favorite teacher? I was fortunate in that I never had one I disliked. They all seemed to care back then. The most influential in my life however, was Coach Emery. Most were unaware of his USMC background, but he was a great coach and showed me how to be successful not only on the track, but in life as well. Thanks to all of them. JMH was a great place for most of us back in the early 70s. What a time it was. Thanks to all of those who put up with me back then. Splash aka Larry Coy
