Larry's Story

Left high school in 65 as we all did. Enlisted in the us vavy in 66 before I got drafted. After boot camp in Great Lakes iillinois I requested shore duty on the east coast and got orders to a ship in San Diego, calif. went to Vietnam in 66 and again in 68. Did search and rescue along the north Vietnam coast rescuing pilots that were shot down and were able to parachute over the Tonkin gulf. Rescued 6-8 each cruise. The navy was kind enough to take me to Hawaii several times, Midway island, Guam, Japan, Philippines, Hong Kong, Brisbane and Sydney Australia, and Pago Pago in the American Somalian islands in the South Pacific. Messed up a few times which cost me being restricted to the ship on one of our r and r trips to Hong Kong. Was awol once in the Philippines and missed ships movement. I was incapacitated one night and woke up the next morning, ,I didn’t know where I was but the ship left the naval base in Subic Bay, Philippines and went to Sasebo Japan. Took me 9 days to catch my ship. Needless to say our captain wasn’t to happy which he showed me by giving me a captains mass which would be equivalent to a Court Marshal in the army..I don’t know how I got promoted but left the ship in Dec.. 69 with the rank of 2nd class petty officer. (Same as a buck serg. In the army. I was a gunners mate on the ship. Not much use in civilian life. Once out of the navy I was still full of p—- and vinegar as we said back then. My plan was to save my money in the navy and buy a new corvette. Well to much excessive partying and hell raisin left me with only $900 in my pocket. Spent all that continuing to party. Finally had to get a job and floated around between a couple of jobs. Finally when I had nothing in my pockets but lint I had to get serious about a job, ...Expand for more
I applied with the C&P phone Co, Baltimore. Gas&Electric, and the Maryland State Police. Next thing I know they all called me within the same week. If I had of known it was going to be that easy to get a job I would have waited longer. Needless to say as many of you know I went with the MSP in July of 71. I married a former class mate in 72. Went well for 10 years, at least I thought so. We had a son and daughter. Both very successful and doing very well. Married again in early 80’s and still married to same woman. I guess I finally got it right. My son just gave us our first grandson Liam Connor Gordon. What a beautiful precious little boy I’ve already been told by his mom what I can and.cant teach him. Stayed with MSP for 32 1/2 years retired in July 2003 with the rank of Sgt.Finally got my new corvette a 2003 Zo6. Everybody said I would kill myself in it. So far so good. I am only half full of p——and vinegar now . Had to slow or I would probably looking at grass roots. Living the good life. I have my boat and few years ago bought a winter home in Naples, Florida. Hate this cold weather. Go down in oct. come back for Xmas then go back til around mid May. By then it’s so damn hot I can’t stand it. So that covers my years since graduation. Between the navy and the msp I have pretty much done and seen it all. Been driven hard and hung out wet. If I could relive my life I would go back to 1965. Have absolutely no desire to relive school again. Would have done a few things differently but not much. I sure as hell would not have missed my ship back in 1968. Well this is my story and I am sticking to it. Looking forward to seeing as many of the 65 graduates as possible at what I hope will be our 55th class reunion. Happy life and good health to all!!!
