Larry's Story
After High School I attended Southern Connecticut State College where I majored in Audiology. I spent most of my free time with the college debate team. I then went to Kent State in Ohio where I got my master¿s degree in Audiology. After Kent I returned to Connecticut and spent the summer doing odd jobs before seriously looking for employment. At the end of the summer my friend Terry Synder, who had been accepted to USC¿s Film School, asked me if I would like to help him drive cross country. Since I had never been to California I agreed. While I was there I managed to get a job at the House Ear Institute (HEI) in Los Angeles doing Cochlear implant research. At HEI I met my good friend Tom Chappell. Several months later Sally Splain, a friend from high school, came out to visit (and never left). Three years later I married Sally and decided that I couldn¿t make enough money in audiology to support a family. With the help of a friend I got a job at Interactive Systems (best place I ever worked), a software company, ...Expand for more
working in support. A year after starting at Interactive our daughter Randy was born. Eventually I became a programmer and developed my skills well enough that I started teach programming at UCLA part-time. Eventually Interactive was sold to Kodak and several years later to Sun Microsystems. While I was working at Sun I met Richard, who got me interested in sailing and astronomy. After working for Sun for a while I decided to move to Locus, a job that I didn¿t really like but at which I met a number of nice people. A year and a half later I went to work for Isocor but after a year 3 of the VPs quite and I realized it was time to move on. I then went to work for Xylan. Shortly after starting work at Xylan I pulled in Tom Chappell and we¿ve been working together ever since. Several years later, Xylan was purchased by Alcatel which later became Alcatel-Lucent. I still work there. In 2006 my granddaughter Madison was born. I still visit Connecticut at least once a year and I regularly visit my old high school friends.
