Larry's Story

Life After leaving school I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where I was an aerial gunner on a B-52D 99th Bombardment Wing Westover AFB Ma. On temporary duty in SEA was involved with Operation Linebacker II in December 1972. After leaving the service I decided to make a career in Law Enforcement, getting my degree in LEA and begining with the Dayton-Hudson Security Police Department I then went to Inkster where I stayed until 1980. After being shot 3 times and several other mishaps I decided to change professions. I took my apprentiship at H.F.C.C. in Metal Model Maker Prototype and worked with Carron & Co. in Inkster. In 1986 I decided to go back into Law Enforcement with the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Prisons in Custody and Security at Milan Correctional Facility. I Graduated from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center at the top of my class and with Honors. In 1989 I came down with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia which thus ended my career. I attempted to return to work in 1994 after 3 years of chemotherapy, but was unable to continue with work because of nerve damage in my back from injections of Methotrexate to the spinal column causing nerve pain and the lack of feeling in the right foot and lower leg and Avascular Nercosis to the right Femerol head, In 1994 I was again shot by a teenage boy at a drugstore in Garden City who attempted to rob me, and with the use of a .177cal pellet pistol shot me 4 times, 1 in the wrist and 3 in the right leg which required surgery to rem...Expand for more
ove one pellet from the knee joint and they left the other 2 in the leg because they were in the muscle of the thigh and calf and would be too damaging to the muscle to remove. Just a reminder of what a young kid can do without thought of the consequences. That is why I became a Volunteer Probation Officer for the 17th Dist. Court in Redford Twp Mi. in 1998 and then accepted a part time job with the Court as a Work Release Program Supervisor. This an alternative Program for probationers in leiu of serving jail time, which is out on the road 3 days a week, and 3 days in court doing computer updates to the program arcives as well as the Coordinator of the Volunteer Probation Officer Program and I still do my 4 days a month as a Volunteer Probation Officer. I am happily married to a wonderful woman, and have 5 beautiful grandchildren 3 girls and 2 boys ages 10,9,8,5, little Josh who was born on 8/17/2002. I am enjoying every day of my life now and ESPECIALLY enjoying my grandchildren. I had a total hip replacement in March of 2002 due to the AVN, and sadly lost my mother 1 week after the surgery who will be in our hearts forever and though it has been a tough 13 years I survived and I thank God for that. Remember: Never Quit or say I Can't because You can do anything if you really put your mind to it. Nothing is impossible - And always tell your Parents you Love them and be there for them whenever you can, because you just don't know who is going to be here today and not tomorrow. God Bless to all.
