Larry's Story
I joined the Naval Air Reserve in 1963, after attending Weatherford College one semester. I reported for duty at the Naval Air Station, New Orleans on November 22nd and heard the news of the JFK assassination.. In New Orleans, I was amazed at the amount of hatred for JFK. Federal troops had enforced school integration. there. I became friends with a black sailor named George Washington (!) and we enjoyed playing golf at the base course. Later, he and I would be members of the base golf team with two other white sailors. I'll always remember how nervous we were traveling through Lousiana in 1964-66. We flew to most tournaments, but had to drive to get to the district golf tourney in Corpus Christi. Wisely, we traveled in uniform to ensure we were not mistaken for civil rights workers.
I wanted to be a pro golfer, but never achieved that dream. I was the pro at our base golf course, for a short stint before discharge. I enjoyed working in the Personnel Dept for 2 years and a year in the Aircraft Training office. To provide for my wife and baby daughter, I had to work various PT jobs in the Navy. The most fun were bartending at base clubs, running the base 35MM movie projector weekly, and picking up and escorting military prisoners in Lo...Expand for more
uisiana jails. Especially, I enjoyed taking several mental cases to the Pensacola Naval Hospital. I heard some strange stories escorting them. ( one trip reminds me of the movie "The Last Detail" with Jack Nicholson. Except that I was alone with the mental guy).
My affiliation with the Navy continued in the Reserve later as a civilian.
After postal retirement I worked in trucking offices at Roadway Express and Red Ball Freight in Dallas. I have 2 beautifull daughters, Lisa Rutledge and Julie Hopkins from my first marriage. I also have two fine grandchildren; Grandson, Christian age 20, and Lindsay, 16. I had a sweet, second failed marriage too.. My rental properties keep me as busy as I want to be now in retirement. I still shoot Pool weekly at Rusty's Billiards and J.J Billiards in West Fort Worth. Occasionally play the organ and/or piano for weddings and funerals.
On 9/5/14 I had surgery at the Dallas VA hospital. A Southwestern Hospital medical team cleaned out my right femoral artery and stented adjoining veins. Too much swelling of my leg got me back in ER on 9/14. Fainting there led me to my getting an ICD (implantable Cardioverter Device) in my chest on 9/16. I'm hoping to shoot my age in golf before next BD in April!!
