Larry's Story

If anyone really looks at this - they are looking for the basic facts first. Did I lose an arm in a terrible accident, or maybe become a woman in the Netherlands? Did I become a terrorist, or, worse yet, a republican? So, here are the basics: I am not married - that is still not legal in all 50 states - although we are now closer!! I am in a partnership (yes, and not a business one) for the past 13 years. My boyfriend is an urban designer. We have lived in Moses Lake, Spokane, Las Vegas, and - just recently - Olympia. We adopted a most fabulous son named Terrence three years ago. He is now 15. He is our pride and joy. And no, he's not from China or some such Sally Struthers infomercial - but a kid out of the child welfare system in the good old US of A. Adoption from our child welfare system (foster care) is - I believe - not only critical, but a responsibility of all caring citizens. I work as an assistant director in state government in Olympia - in the child advocacy arena. I continue to believe that the personal is the political -no surprises there! I try to dedicate as much time advocacy and equality for all disenfranchised groups as time allows. Old age does not bring all of us to complacency and conservatism - as the saying goes. I continue to believe that Ronald Regan and both Bushes were the worst things that happened to America in past 30 years. I still remember feeling scared and desperate in November 1980 when Regan was elected (there - that's my childhood memory). I also remember a lot of good and happy times at Moses Lake High. Although it was a rough and terrible place for a gay kid trying to grow up in a straight world - the people I met (the friends that I had) were wonderful. That, I suppose, is the only reason I paid the 19.99 to come look around at this site. Lee (most certainly), Ramiro, Trisha (cuz), Sherry, the Twins, Rudy, David, Andy (although you go back a lot further than high school). Names keep coming to me - so won't try to name everyone. It's really strange thinking back and trying to remember. I just know that it could have been a lot worse for me - but people (I believe) are basically pretty good. The years of high school could hav...Expand for more
e been worse - but they weren't. Maybe I was just too chemically altered to know the difference. I left high school and immediately went into a professional life of permanent student. I went to seven colleges and universities. I spend nearly 15 years before I achieved a master's degree in clinical psychology (yeah, that is no surprise). Now with an advanced degree I think I can be free to spout my viewpoint, politics, and admittedly-biased opinion in any format available to me....Isn't the internet a wonderful thing? Life is pretty good right now. My job is very busy, but ultimately satisfying. I am addicted to my blackberry now. It's probably healthier (although the verdict is still out on that one). I work for the MAN (or WOMAN) now - and try to remind myself that I can make a meaningful difference Inside the System, as opposed to Outside. I remain passionate about children's issues, the flawed (but wonderful) democracy we all live in, and ensuring that all citizens enjoy equal (not special) rights. I imagine that this is a bit on the long side for Classmate's bio section. I have so many characters left - with so much more to say!! But I will try not to bore those who have gotten this far with my tangential thoughts and ramblings (it must be the long-term effects of going to Evergreen State College and all that "paper" I consumed). I am happy now - and that is important. I have a good life, with a good partner and a wonderful son. We are making our life and trying to make a difference where we can. I can't say that high school saved my life, or that there was some amazing teacher who turned me around (although Mr. C. in history was inspiring and encouraged me to get my first college degree in history) - that was my own work and journey. If anything - Sharon (Woody's Drive-In) saved my life and got me focused. It's been a strange and wonderful journey to my 25th class reunion. I hope that it happens. I would like to be there. For no other reason than to see how everyone looks and how many of us have had alterations along the way! Send me note sometime - I would love to hear from folks. Take good care of yourselves and your kids. I hope to see you around.
