Larry's Story
I’m gonna do this “story” in stages, so bear with me. Graduated with all you great kiddos and spent 2 years at Nassau Community College getting all those pesky liberal arts classes out of the way. Then, with one suitcase in hand, I boarded an airplane to Phoenix and planned to spend 2 more years at ASU. Problem was, the university transferred all my 62 credits, but the college of engineering only accepted 11. So it took me another 3 1/2 years to graduate. By then, I was married for 6 months, had two cars and an apt full of stuff. I got my first real job with Granite Construction Co. in Washington, DC. Spent 5 years there building various first sections of the WMATA subway system. We cranked out our first kid (boy) in Fairfax, VA. I guess I made a name for myself at Granite, because they moved me to California to be part of the Helms project management team. I bought my first home in Shaver Lake, CA, which was about 30 miles downhill from the project site. The project was a pumped storage ...Expand for more
hydroelectric plant. We had 2000 workers high up in the Sierras and our first winter was a 100 year winter. Only 35 feet of snow. Had our second kid (girl) in Fresno, CA., right Jin the middle of a snowstorm in January. Getting to the hospital is a story for another time. Spent 3 1/2 years there then left Granite and moved to Phoenix. I went to work with a company from Danville, CA, (Ball, Ball & Brosamer). We had two sections of the Central Arizona Project to build totaling 60 miles of giant concrete lined canals with numerous bridges, etc. 2 1/2 years later, finished that work and was hired away by a company in Denver Who had a hydroelectric project to build outside of Ketchikan, Alaska. When I took the job, they were gonna move my family to Alaska. We were unable to find “suitable “ housing, so they moved the family back to our home in Shaver Lake that we were having trouble selling. So off to work I go, after moving family back to Shaver. Oh, we cranked out another kid (girl) in Fresno.
