Larry's Story
I was born at a very early age. Got journalism degree at University of Florida (Go Gators!). Wrote for newspaper out of college, but I've spent most of adult life as a writer-editor in public relations at University of Florida--for 17 years with the UF Health Science Center. Had own writing-PR consulting biz in Gainesville for 7 years. I've been back at UF since 2004 as director of news and communications at UF College of Education. Love my job, and I sure hope we can save education in the face of all these budget cuts.
My wife, Jean, and I celebrated our 25th anniversary in 2007. Jean is a fine British lass and I never tire of her accent. She's a true humanitarian with a heart of gold, who always laughs at my jokes and has somehow managed to put up with all my foibles for all these years.
I played power and beach doubles volleyball in college and on into my 30s. Played serious tennis into my 40s, played and coached city league softball, and coached my son's little league baseball teams. Became a basketball dad while son (Ben, born in 1987) excelled in hoops on traveling club teams and in high school. He also played baseball in high school. He's now attending the School of Hard Knocks, working full time. Don't think college is for him, but he's got good street smarts and also has a big heart like h...Expand for more
is mom, and a weird sense of humor like his dad.
Now, as I "gracefully transition" (kicking and screaming all the way!) into middle age, I'm easing into sports retirement (bum knee), but still working out and kayaking. I hope to be dancing up a storm again at next high school reunion if we ever have another one.
To replace my lifelong sports obsession, I'm going back to my music roots. I just set back up the drumset I had in high school, but I'm taking up guitar, too, and really enjoying it. (Free Bird!) Much more relaxing and satisfying.
I've had a pretty nice life. It's had its ups and downs, and I'm truly concerned about where the world--and our country--is heading, especially under the current administration. So I just try to make my own little world as comfortable, fun and enjoyable as it can be, with a little help from my Ipod and the 1,500 (and counting) songs in its Library. (Long live Zeppelin!)
Reunions are a blast! Do come whenever we have one. Still love rock music from 60s & 70s, as well as some of today's tunes. Just don't turn on that crap rap music within my hearing distance (although I have to admit I like an Usher song or two, compliments of my son. Gotta great beat--and I am a drummer, after all).
Drop me a line. And don't sweat the small stuff! Later Gators--& Green Devils!
