Larry's Story

Life I was smart enough to marry the right lady (Lindy) in 1970 and have been enjoying the benefits of that for the last 36 years. While I was still in law school we had our first child, Bryan, born in Long Beach. After finishing school, we moved back to Ventura and I found a job with a small Oxnard firm in '74. Our daughter, Gina, was born in Saint John's Hospital in 1976. We have lived in the same home in Ventura since 1976. We are within 100 yards of where I was living with my Mom on high school graduation day in 1964. So much for my wanderlust tendencies. I keep busy doing community things like serving in Rotary, and have been on the boards of several charities like the Salvation Army and Ventura Music Festival. Currently I'm on the Boards for the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation and TEACh (a scholarship porgram for foster care youth) and am a member of the Advisory Council for The Segue Program (a high school career guidance plan). I became a Christian a few years ago and now put time and energy into our local church, Bible Fellowship Church. For several years now, I have served on the Board of Elders. Now, the kids are grown and out of the nest. Bryan got an MBA from CSUN, is married to Avery, and works in Hayward, Ca for Washington Mutual. Gina lives in Moorpark with her husband Luv and daughter Makena (born August 1, 2005), has a Masters from CSUN in Physical Therapy. Gina and Luv own Simi Physical Therapy Clinic in (where else?) Simi Valley. Wife Lindy has been active in real estate sales since 1976 and has developed quite a throng of loyal clients. God has abundantly blessed me with a great family and dear friends. -Larry School Those years at Buena in the early 60's were bizarre. Looking back, it was like driving through fog - so much going on around me that I was oblivious to. Probably too busy being paranoid about not wearing the right shoes (Chuck Taylor Converse?) and the right shirts (oxford cloth, button down collar?) How did any of us survive? If you know how I can contact either Linda or Sharon Matheny, please send me an email thru classmates! -Larry Workplace After working for Jill and Judy Coryell's folks at Frosty Hi where can you go? sh, delivering furniture, keeping tires in stock, pumping gas and such. I graduated from law school in 1974 and got a job soon after in Oxnard with a small firm. In 1978, the firm disbanded and I opened my own office. In 1985 we closed that down and I went to work for the County of Ventura as one of several Assistant County Counsels. During the next 14 years I handled the legal work for the Assessor, Tax Collector, Retirement Department, and Social Services Agency. Overlapping this time, I taught Business Law at both Ventura College and CSUN's Ventura Campus, spanning 12 years. In April, 1999, I changed careers by accepting an appointment to the position of Assistant Treasurer-Tax Collector for Ventura County. When my boss announced his retirement, I ran for, and won, the position of Ventura County Treasurer-Tax Collector-Public Administrator. In the June 2006 primary, I was re-elected to another 4-year term. (This result was aided a bit by the fact that no one ran against me.) My duties also include serving as the County's Public Guardian, which means that I am appointed by the court to be the conservator for about 300 people who have diminished capacity because of mental illness or dementia. This puts a little "heart" balance in with the "head" items that occupy most of my work day. I also sit on the County's Finance Committee, the Deferred Compensation Committee and the Board of Retirement. I now realize that I am actually nuts because I love this job! I mean, nobody likes to pay taxes, so things start off negative. But I find great joy in pointing my staff in the direction of giving service that is above and beyond the expectations of most taxpayers. Military Enlisted in the USNR, thru the Santa Barbara Naval Reserve Center and later transferred to the North Hollywood Center because it was closer to where I was living in Northridge. A couple of weeks after graduating from CSUN in 1969, I reported for active duty at the Long Beach Naval Station and was put to work in the admin office. After several weeks, my permanent orders came thru for the "Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group, Long Beach" requiring that I relocate about a mile away. I spent the remainder of what turned out to be 22 months of active duty at CCDG-Long Beach.
