Iowa? How did I wind up in *Iowa*? A long story!
I've been teaching American history, Southern history, and global military history at Iowa State since 2008, quite happily. I run long distance (20 marathons from NYC to Taipei to Copenhagen since 2002), scuba when I can, work on my Spanish and Chinese, and always enjoy curling up with the cats to watch an old movie. No kids, thank god.--who needs the mockery?

ave it away, worked to grow democracy in a country I love. Found love on the other side of the world--SC!--came back to Illinois, finished up my doctorate, published my big book on the coming of the Civil War, and today all's going well. We roam around the globe, eat great food, sleep on exotic beaches, read, write, and teach where we can, and our ideas matter. I make sure that the squirrels, birds, and rabbits are fed in the morning, and then I type up my ideas on Shakespeare, Charlie Chaplin, Glenn Gould, and Abraham Lincoln--and people seem to think they're of value. Wild Bill Elliott would have disagreed! Now I'm working on three books and a screenplay: watch for "Vanishing Matilda"--an astonishing murder mystery and more.
