Larry's Story
Life
Hard to believe it's been over 20 years since High School. After graduating from Jersey Village High (MAY '82), I joined the Navy and went to Boot Camp in San Diego, CA (OCT '82). After a quick tour in Norfolk, VA with VAW-121 and a Mediteranean deployment onboard the USS EISENHOWER (CV-69), I decided I was better suited being an Air Traffic Controller than a E-2 Plane Captain washing airplanes. So the Navy sent me to Millington (Memphis) TN (JUN'84) and upon graduation (SEP '84) I requested and recieved orders to Corpus Christi, TX. While stationed in Corpus I earned all ATC quals possible and received my BA from Embry-Riddle (OCT '87) . I applied for and was accepted to Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS) but since my enlistment was about to expire before my class date was available some solid leadership convinced me to apply for the local civilian ATC position. Somehow I was bumped to the front of the line and was given a starting date one week after my Honorable Discharge. Approximately one year later I was off to Pensacola, FL and soon discovered the Redneck Riviera of the United States. While stationed in the Pensacola area I completed AOCS (OCT '90), Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Flight training at NATTC, VT-2 and HT-8 (AUG '92). Enjoying Florida so much, I requested and received orders for HSL-EAST so the Navy sent me to Jacksonville, FL. I complet...Expand for more
ed the Fleet Replacement Squadron Pilot Training Program at HSL-40 (JUN '93) and between the FRS and my first operational squadron, HSL-42, I married the former Rebecca Leacy Hanna of Milton, FL. After a MED deployment onboard the USS TAYLOR (FFG-50) (JAN '94 -JUL '94) and a MED/MEF onboard USS NORMANDY (CG-60) (AUG 95-FEB 96), I was sent to HT-18 (DEC '96) at NAS Whiting Field (Pensacola/Milton) as a Helicopter Flight Instructor. Here we had our first child Leacy (JUL '98) and shortly after we received orders to USS INCHON (MCS-12) (DEC '99)in Ingleside, TX. Ingleside is on the other side of the bay from Corpus and although considered a disassociated sea tour for my OOD/Flight Deck Officer tour, I was actually able to go back and work as an Air Traffic Controller for my Air Boss and in the radar room when underway. Also while stationed in the Corpus area, we had our second child Lydia (FEB '01). After completion of the INCHON's final deployment with a Panama Canal transit and West Pacific cruise (APR '01- AUG '01), we received our next set of orders back to Jacksonville, FL. HSL-46 was my next operational squadron where I deployed onboard USS OSCAR-AUSTIN (DDG-79) (DEC '02-MAY '03). After my Officer In Charge tour at HSL-46, I was then transferred to HSL-40 as the Maintenance Officer and FRS Flight Instructor where I await my future orders. That's it for now...
