Larry's Story
College
I was intimidated by the size of Berkeley at first, but living at the Ridge House co-op the entire 4 years (Even though I didnt get a single room till I was a Junior) created a more manageable group ("we 35 guy")so that by the end of my second year I felt I had a place where I belonged. The campus was/is beautiful, I loved the house, and once I got through the "pre-med filters" I got to enjoy upper division classes focussing on learning more than studying for grades, especially concentrating on Clinical and Social psych. I got into co-managing the house Special Dinners for a few quarters, plann...Expand for more
ing the meals and cooking with a small team for around 40. Cooking, esp ethnic food, for friends has been a favorite activity ever since. And I kept reading fiction, science fiction and fantasy throughout, especially character- driven stories. I still dream about Ridge House(I'll go back with enough seniority to get a single room with a view!), Berkeley restaurants, and the requisite finals-approaching-and-I-havent-read-the-textbooks stuff (up to weekly). I feel much more connected to Berkeley than to Med School, not just because I did better academically but probably from the embracing social environment.
