Larry's Story
I left Gettysburg in 10th grade, moved to Hanover for a short while then to York. In my senior year at Wm. Penn High they discovered I didn’t have some credits from 10th grade and they were going to make me repeat 10th grade so I quit and enlisted in the Army where I learned to operate heavy construction equipment. After my three year enlistment was up I went back to York for a few months worked at Klines quarry as a front loader operator then decided to hitch hike around the country for awhile and I ended up in Detroit working as a sentry dog handler at a Nike Missile site. Then I read the book Green Beret and the song ‘Green Beret by Barry Sadler came out and I decided to re-enlist in the Army to go to fight in Vietnam. an Infantry machine gunner then transferred to an aviation unit where I was a door gunner on a Huey UH1B Gunship. After a year in the Nam, being shot down 4 times and wounded three times I came back to the world and was assigned to the 6th Armored Cav. at Ft. Meade, Md as the training NCO until my discharge in 1970. I then went to flight school and got my commercial pilots license and worked for Ocean Air in Ocean City, Md. as a banner pilot in the summer and a charter pilot in the winter. After 12 years of flying I got bored with it and became a fashion and glamour photographer, that led to video production and web design which I did until I retired. Now I am happily retired and build and fly radio control airplanes and drones for fun. That’s all folks.
