Larry's Story
I grew up mostly in south Modesto and attended Shackelford elementary, on and off, through the sixth grade. Then La Loma and Mark Twain junior highs through the eighth grade. Then MHS until January 1960. We moved 23 times in those 10 1/2 years. I started working nights at the Modesto Bowl in early 1959 and continued there until spring of 1960.
Enlisted in the U.S. air force September 1960. Finished air traffic control school in May 1961 and assigned to the Philippines. Spent the next nine years at locations in southern California, Philippines, Viet Nam. and southern Nevada.
Left active duty in 1970 to go to work for the FAA as an air traffic controller at San Jose control tower. Spent next 23 years as tower or radar controller at Burbank, Las Vegas and Sacramento. 25, 1993 two days after my 50th birthday.
Concurrently with leaving the air force I enlisted in the California air national guard,as an Air traffic control superintendent. Retired December 1982 as a Senior Master Sergeant.
Married Laura Shinn - MHS class of 1962- in October 1963. Her mother, Lillian, worked at Flakey Cream for years.
We had two daughters Tami - born 1965 and Christy - born 1967. Both now live in Sonora, near their mother.
Laura and I divorced in 1987.
Married second wife Tracey Settle - Thousand Oaks HS, class of 1973. Lived in Sacramento until 2004 and moved to Lebanon, Missouri where we still live. 90 miles from Branson.
I returned to school in the 70s and received BA in management from University of LaVerne, Ca. in 1978. Graduate studies in Public Administration at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
