More about Larry:"As a Navy junior, I was born in Hawaii and attended 12 public schools in 12 years of schooling in California and Virginia. Graduated UVA in 1960, and George Washington U. in 1964 (both degrees in English). A budding career as a journalist in Pennsylvania (where I met wife Gill) was interrupted by call to active duty in the National Guard. Gill and I married and then headed for California, where I served for two years--first at a country-club of a post in Los Angeles and then, after expressing my anti-Vietnam War views at a promotion hearing, at a post in the Mohave Desert. First son Kevin was born in Los Angeles and Howard Douglas was born in the desert (where he later worked as a wildlife biologist). Back in civilian life once again, I worked as a teacher (English, humanities, classic literature, photography) at a small Episcopal-affiliated school in Southern Maryland. w pay and growing family were incentives to move on. Public information job opening at the state education department in Baltimore seemed just about right, as it combined my journalistic background with my teaching experience. I retired from the department more than 30 years later. The job took me from the homes of inner city Baltimore children to the state's prisons to the rural areas of Western Maryland and the Eastern Shore. I worked with Title I programs for disadvantaged children, edited the department's major publications, and helped promote school reform. For most of this time, home was in Columbia, MD, where daughter Emily and son Matt were born. I took an early retirement option in 1999, and Gill and I moved to Pensacola to care for my Mom and Dad and her Mom. Dad—J. Howard Chamblin—died in 2001. Gill’s Mom—Mary McClafferty Anderson—died in 2006. In October 2010, Mom—Bessie Alice “Betty” Chamblin-- turns 99 and Douglas gets married. He and Lauren bought a house together last year in mid-town Atlanta. Besides the obvious care-taking and housekeeping (so to speak), I spend my time with Sustainable West Florida and in other ways promoting the Great Turning from our "industrial growth society to a self-sustaining civilization" (that's a quote from a wonderful Buddhist scholar-guru that I met a few years at a workshop in Oregon). In the hot summer of 2010, we sit here on Bayou Grande, across from Naval Air Station Pensacola, waiting for signs of oil...and waiting also for an awakening to the connection between this disaster and the warming and rising seas to come.".
