Larry's Story
Hello to all my fellow AGHS graduates circa 1968! those of you who remember me, may recall that I was a kind of shy, (?) soft-spoken skinny kid who was interested in two things during school...surfing, and girls...both of which got me in hot water more than once., I was big into Art, took four yrs of Latin and English, and was lousy in Math!
Following graduation I went into the USAF, was volunteered for the air police, and spent half of my enlistment overseas in the Pacific in the law enforcment end, and half stateside, in security, at a bomber base near Marysville CA. I discharged as a Staff Sgt and after going to Cuesta College on the GI Bill, hired on with the San Luis Obispo Co Sheriff's Dept in 1974.. No, I never dreamed I would ever be a cop! .My wife at the time, Susan (Martin) and I had two sons together, Pete and Matt, and lived in Arroyo Grande. The boys still live in SLO County and both work for the department now also, one as a deputy, the other as a correctional officer..Susan and I, while no longer together, are blessed with four grandchildren. Their grandma lives just a short distance away.
I retired from the Dept as a Commander, after 30 yrs. During my career I worked through the ranks in patrol, the jail, K-9, Narcotics, Criminal Investigations, and Internal Affairs. I made a lot of friends, had a lot of different assignments, and had many rewarding, and some not so rewarding, experiences. After retiring, I fulfilled a dream of mine to live in the mountains, and moved to Bonners Ferry in N. Idaho, just a few miles from the Canadian border. I like to hunt, fish some, and spend leisure time outdoors, but I have also developed new interests, like going to antique/collectible auctions,...Expand for more
landscaping, a small orchard, and my little flock of chickens, "the girls", who keep me entertained with their goofy stunts... (Checkers, Dottie, Rhoda Morgenstern the Thief, and Evita the Brazilian Prostitute - and their protector and defender, Bob, who was once gay). I also just got a canoe, and a tractor - for the first time! I do love the snow and the winter weather in general, of course I don't have to go to work in it other than to clear my driveway...watching Canada geese fly south every year is a rich experience.
I go to a fantastic Christ-centered church right in downtown Bonners Ferry. I am single, a conservative, consider myself a sheepdog by nature, and look forward to the next great plan (adventure) that God has worked out for my life whatever and with whoever that may be.
And, as one can see by the photos, I have my little wiener dog, Heidi, now probably 12 yrs or more, who was a pound rescue...anti-social, and a brat, but my brat who loves me almost as much as her treaties and her spot in the back seat of my pick up. My goal is to spoil her until death which hopefully will not be by way of an eagle or hawk, which I am always on the lookout for, and who are always croozin my airspace eyeballing for chickens and daschunds. When Heidi finally takes her dirt nap, I will probably go back to Denmark to acquire another Shepherd, hopefully using one of my old police dog contacts when I worked K-9.
I seem to be busier now than when I was working full time; I try to take care of myself by living right, staying active, and keeping everything in perspective.
So I hope we can renew old friendships and generate new ones from our AGHS days. Adios friends, hope to hear from you. Larry.
