Larry's Story

It¿s been quite a ride. I've loved, and I've lost, and made some great friends along the way. I can count my true regrets on one hand and my greatest achievements on the other. This all becomes easier as you get older and begin to feel mortal. I¿m a man of simple tastes and pleasures, which makes me pretty boring by most peoples standards. I have however gained great pleasure from my family and friends, listening to good music, reading great books and working with my hands around the house. So, what have I been doing? I joined the army straight out of high school with fellow classmates and great friends Bobby Trautman and Gregg Cooke, (help me here) I believe Jimmy Stoneking and Jim Luney joined a few weeks later and was also at Ft. Ord for basic training at the same time. Bobby and I went on to Ft. Sill for additional training and wound up at Ft. Bliss in the 3rd Armored Calvary as diesel mechanics working on tanks for the reminder of our enlistment. Gregg joined us in Texas and became a helicopter mechanic in the 3rd armored Air Calvary. I remember that Bobby was one if not the best mechanic the unit had and Gregg was also one of the best in his unit. We eventually all resided in the same apartment complex off base and either shared an apartment or lived above or below one another where some great times were had by all. Bobby and Patsy Burrows were married during that time period and lived there as well. I do recall that their wedding was one of the best I ever attended and I believe I became intoxicated at the reception. After we were released from the army I moved back to Sunny southern Cal where I eventually roomed with Jimmy Stoneking and Gregg at va...Expand for more
rious address around El Cajon and Santee and for a brief period Gregg's sister Denell shared a house with us. We had some great parties and since I can't remember all the details I will not share any blurry stories that might incriminate the innocent in case our children read this. I do want to thank some great friends whose friendship was needed during some bleak times. Mary Wright was a great comfort. Mary was a great friend then as she is now. All of you who know her or have known her know what I¿m talking about, she is one of the best humans ever. Mary's brother Bill was also a good friend when I needed one and is missed. I still keep in contact via phone call once or twice a year with Gregg and Mary. Gregg remains my best friend after all these years. After moving to Arkansas I attended the University of Arkansas (whoo pig sooie) and will always be a diehard Razorback fan. I met my wife of over thirty years here in AR and we have three children. My family has been a blessing, all are healthy and happy and that is my greatest success in life. I worked for twenty years in Human Resources for a large (snack cake) manufacturing company. I currently work in the cable industry. Maybe I¿ll retire someday and finish the novel that will make me rich and famous, but as you can tell from my grammar it's going to take a lot of proof reading and time. They did say story didn't they? If any of you can please provide some updates on some old friends that I either haven't heard from or anything about them via Classmates I will appreciate it: Paul Johnson, Martha Velez, Rosemary Rameriz, Susie Williams, Ray Charrier, George Vasquez, Jim Looney, and Dennis Thing.
