Larry's Story

I transferred to Washington Rural High School in the fall of '54, after attending ( and playing Sophomore football) at Wyandotte High School in KCK . We moved to the "country" and my brother Jerry and I began our life there as passengers on Bus #5 after bicycling 5 miles to enroll in our new school. I thought I knew no one, but discovered that my old friend from Northwest Junior High School ( Ed Doughty) was a popular athlete at Washington, and made sure that I was welcomed to his lunch table with the other guys...what a blessing! My best guy friends were Gary Sturtridge and Ed Doughty, while gal friends were Janice Tolman, Barbara Young, and Edris Story. After graduation, I worked for a year at Phillips 66 refinery in Kansas City ( as a maintenance yardman in the plant) so I could enter college, then I attended KCK Junior College for two years (along with my brother Jerry, who graduated from Washington in '57), in a Pre-Engineering program. The math proved to be a major stumbling block, so after graduation from KCKJC, I enrolled in an Industrial Design program at Kansas University (no math!), graduating with a BFA in Industrial Design/Commercial Art in January of 1963. One highlight of that experience was the design of a truly unique "dome tent" as part of a 4 man team from the senior class design majors for a commercial product. The rights to manufacture it were sold to Coleman for $200! (That's now the standard tent everywhere and is sold in every sporting goods store in this country.) Prior to that I had married Norma Barnhill in 1962, who also attended KU, majoring in Education. We met in our Sunday School class at Grandview Baptist in KCK. For a month after graduation I worked for TWA at the Jack Frye Training Center in KCMO, in the graphics department, but the draft was imminent, so I enlisted, hoping for a better assignment. That didn't happen!. I enlisted in the Army, and after basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, was sent to Aberdeen Proving Grounds (Maryland) working in the Ordnance School Training Aids Section as an Illustrator, Norma and I enjoyed sight seeing in Maryland and she began using her teaching degree as a teacher in the local school, which catered to children from military families. I then got orders to Fort Bragg (North Carolina) for Psychological Warfare training. After 8 weeks of rigorous training, in February of 1964 I was ordered from there to Okinawa, Japan assigned to the 14th Psychological Warfare Battalion at Machinato. My assignments included leaflet dropping from fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, and distribution by balloon launches, as well as illustration and design of propaganda materials. I also worked with the Special Forces at the Matsuda Testing Range in the Northern part of the island as a technical assistant...a great assignment. Norma joined me on Okinawa in May 1964, but after two deployments to Vietnam (in August 1964 to work for the Military Assistance Command-VietNam at USIS in SaiGon, then in May 1965 with a 24 man Rapid Reaction Team attached to the 173rd Airborne Brigade to Bien Hoa, Republic of Viet Nam.) Norma was evacuated back to the states while I completed my service there with the 20th Psy Ops Detachment (Advisory), being awarded a Bronze Star and Army Commendation medals as a specialist sergeant for my service. After my discharge in February 1966 I worked mostly in Advertising, Graphic Design and management for 40 years, first with Didde Glaser ( Advertising Manager for that printing press manufacturer in Emporia, Kansas) David C. Cook ( as Advertising Manger, then Executive Art Director at that Christian publishing company in Elgin, Illinois ) running my own Advertising/Illustration/Design Agency for 12 years, then 9 years as Plant Manager for American Slide Chart in Wheaton, Illinois prior to retiring in 2003. During those years I also illustrated 2 children's books, and did nearly 100 cartoons and illustrations for many Christian magazines and curriculum materials for Christian Publishers. I also taught Commercial Art courses in the night program at Emporia State University as a contr...Expand for more
act lecturer for 5 years (1968-73). I was ordained as a Deacon in the Southern Baptist Church in 1968, serving 8 years as deacon and Chairman of the Deacon Board of our church in Emporia. I also taught Junior and Senior High Sunday School classes for several years. Our two daughters were born in Emporia. We relocated to Humble, Texas ( North of Houston) in 2004 (after Norma retired from 27 years in teaching) to be near our youngest daughter and her family and found a wonderful church (Humble Area First Baptist ) to be an active part of. Our "Life Group" class has given us a built-in group of truly committed Christians as friends who have become a major part of our lives. We also taught a Sunday School class of 6 year olds, while serving as missions coordinators for five years. Our 57th wedding anniversary was in June 2019, a major milestone and blessing to us both. To celebrate our 50th we enjoyed a cruise to Europe in September of that year, which was our first time out of the country since the difficult, unsatisfying years in Asia. My 81st birthday was this June. In retirement I have resumed watercolor and oil painting (after a nearly 30 year hiatus) and have paintings in many private collections and have sold them through galleries in the past and plan to sell my work on line...if I can figure out how to build a website!. We have two daughters and 11 grandchildren, and are truly blessed! I survived prostate cancer, after a radical surgery in '08 and radiation for a reocurrence in '10, and am in remission...a blessing and relief! I truly thank God for that, and for the general good health we both enjoy. Norma has served as a Nanny to a young couple in The Woodlands and is truly blessed by their love for her for these 10 years. I have many good memories of Washington "Rural" High School. Some special people come to mind...Ed Doughty, Gary Sturtridge (who was in our wedding) Dale Chaffin, Barbara Young, Edris Story, and so many others that my rusty old memory can't retrieve right now. Those were good days, and I still have fond memories of them. I do reget never attending the Junior/Senior Prom, but finances prevented that. I visited Washington H.S. last summer, and the changes are amazing after all these years. It was saddening to see the metal detector in the entrance, and security guards! Times have truly changed, and not for the better! My time there was truly wonderful, a time to be treasured. I have volunteered to serve as a mentor for minority boys in a low-performing grade school in the Humble ISD and my first year was an incredible blessing. My student went from a disruptive problem student to a boy his teacher referred to as "her best student". My involvement is one hour, one day each week, and the effect God had on his young life has encouraged me to continue working in this (Kid's Hope) program through our church . After 7 years I still enjoy being a help and encouragement to these boys. Jeanne and I also served as "readers" for first grade boys who need help in that part of their education. The Statler Brothers recorded a song called "The Class of '57" some years ago, and it's a nostalgic blast. Even though my class was '56, the lyrics refer to the hopes and dreams of high school, then the reality of life afterwards, with some doing well, others not so much. I honestly feel that God has truly blessed my life...not just in my work (I was only out of work for one month in over 40 years, and that was when I got out of the Army), but in a wonderful marriage, 2 beautiful daughters, 11 delightful grandchildren, good Christian friends, and a faith that has grown and matured over all these years. I was able to faithfully and honorably serve my country and return home to build a life that I hope has blessed others. I thank God every day for the incredible blessings He has given me and those I love. May my story be a blessing to you 1956 graduates from Washington "Rural" High School. I am also thankful that ours was one of the few integrated high schools in the state, which allowed all of us (whatever our color) to be friends. What a blessing!.
