Larry's Story

After high school I spent 6 years in the United States Navy in the nuclear power program basically as a load dispatcher; think how electricity is dispersed from a dam to cities. I experience one WestPAC cruise visiting the Phillipeans, Singapore, Kenya, Thailand, and Hong Kong. I even got to go on an African safari in Kenya (zebras are definitely not endagered). I was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1990 and attended the University of Washington recieving my BSEE (bachelor of science in electical engineering). I had great time in college, although in retrospec I could probably have sacrificed a couple tenths of GPA and had slightly more fun. I was focused though on getting my degree, but I did enjoy the sweet National Championship in football and attended every game all 5 years I was at UW and one year after I graduated. After my bachelor's degree I started my master's in business but realized I was tired of school and went looking for a job. I landed at Sprint PCS building out the first PCS system in the Seattle area as a transport engineer. A transport engineer is basically someone who designs how to get the cell signal from the cell site back to the switch so the call can be completed to anyone else landline or cell phone. It was there I discovered my interest in IT as I was also the LAN administrator for the Seattle office. I decide to quit and pursue IT as a career by getting my MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) cerification and look for an IT position. I recieved and accepted an offer from Hewlett Packard in Boise, ID as a server engineer. I paid my dues internally building and supporting HP groups servers there. At the same time my fiance which followed me from Seattle agreed to marry me. we had a wonderful wedding in Maui with a 3 week honnymoon there. Unfortuately she hated Boise so I transfered to HP in the bay area an spent a year in Palo Alto doing server support for the California HP group. My now wife wa...Expand for more
s pregnent and the bay area costs were huge so I went looking around and landed a systems engineer position for Intel in Hillsboro, Or. My job at Intel increased my IT scope building my career, the only problem being my wife and I were a little too close to my parents causing conflict especially with the new baby. we both wanted to get back to the Seattle area so I internally transferred within Intel to Dupont, Wa (40 min south of Seattle) but the job sucked. I decide to bail and find something else, but unfortuately this was right at the point of the tech bubble collapse and I was unemployed for 8 months. I never thought I would ever hear "you are over qualifed" speach, but I heard it plenty. I went the consulting rought, and took a position with Electronic Evidence Discovery which moved us to west Seattle. That experience was great since it paid very well, until my buy off on my contract for the company was low enough where the compay offered stay at a much lower rate or leave. As a result I circulated my resume to all our vendors where it found a place in front of people at Microsoft which had a position that matched me to a tee. I have been with Microsoft for 6.5 years now and have a tremendous experience. It is by far the best company I have worked for. I have learned so much, enhancing my career, and worked with the BEST people. I have founds so many friends and networking opportunities for my career going forward. Currently I work for adCenter, the monitizing side of Microsoft online services as the senior server engineer. On the personal side, my wife and I divorce in 2006 after 8 years of marrige and one incredible beautiful son. My ex-wife and I are very good friends and have done everything possible to abstact all the adult stuff from my son's experience. I am a dedicated father and my son and I are closer than ever.
