Larry's Story

Updated Jan 2015 - Well, sitting here thinking I've got to sign up for Medicare this year and I'm sure many are in the same boat. Who would have thought any of us would be sitting around thinking of old age! I'm also sitting here in my apartment outside of Buffalo, NY watching ......yes.....more snow, blustery cold winds, and hoping to see the sun one of these days. Hope you're all well and I recall many of the great names on here who stopped by and left signatures or visited. I lived on Bosworth Lane and grew up with Jim Dougherty, Marion Jehens, Ron Doyle, Bob McCullough, and Dave Peterson (who unfortunately died a few years back), all close neighbors. I had a phone call with "Doc" months back for the second time and we'd played some catch up on days gone by. "Doc" was the first of the gang to have a car; 1957 Chevy and if he had it today, it would be worth thousands! Tells me no one has seen/heard hide nor hair from Ron Doyle. Marion is or was in California last we heard. Many a fond memory of those glory summer days we had at Joe Randall's house in the field across the street! Over on Baldwin you know....the only "non-Levitt" house in all the area. Joe is best remembered for stealing his dad's Playboys and bringing them out to the shed for all of us to enjoy! He used to get real pissed when someone tried to remove the centerfolds. I haven't seen Joe in many years but did manage to catch him probably 10 plus years back at the hobby store he was running in Willingboro. I understand it's long gone now. I know Joe had worked for the phone company for many years prior. Many years back, Joe came over to my sister's house when I visited home and my old buddy, Dave Earle, came with him. Dave of course served the Willingboro Police for years and more recently, I was sorry to hear about the death of his wife. Needless to say, Joe, Dave and myself had more laughs about the old days than ever! My high school sweetheart was Sue Worrilow, (now Susan Ward) and while in NJ visiting my sisters 2 or 3 years, Sue and I had the opportunity to meet again in the Cherry Hill area for coffee after the decades. I could have picked her out of a crowd in a heartbeat; didn't age a day, unlike me. Sure was good to see her again, and sure did bring back some memories! I took Sue to the movies at Cherry Hill Mall one night in my new '59 black Chevy which I only owned about 2 weeks if that. We came out.......the car was gonzoed......and never saw it again! I finally retired in 2003 as an FBI Agent (my childhood ambition), having served 16 years in NYC on a Terrorism Task Force until 1990, a year before 9/11. I lost an old FBI friend, John O'Neil, in that murderous attack. That year, I was transferred to Buffalo, NY and spent another 13 years working cases and acting as Coordinator of a Gang/Violent Crime Task ...Expand for more
Force with local Departments. As my retirement qualification age approached, I figured it was time to go before I ended up shot dead by some 14 year old gangster. My years in Buffalo were some of the most violent of my career and the war against guns, drugs and gangs was a frustrating one many times over. That said though, serving as an FBI agent was a fabulous career and wish I could do it over again. Really enjoyed the traveling and being sent on special assignments to other states, and on one case, to London. I really miss the game of "cops and robbers" as any of you who became policemen can understand. Since retirement, I've done two on camera interviews with "The History Channel: FBI Files" regarding two old terrorism cases I had while in NYC. These are still airing as repeats on the TV channel even today. (In hindsight, I should really stay away from the cameras.) My nephew, Tim Ryan, is a Willingboro detective down there and I'm real proud of his accomplishments on the Department. Tell him Hi if he yanks you over! Maybe save you a ticket! Right now in retirement, I'm not working but doing a lot of fishing and playing around with my '66 Chevy Caprice "muscle car." Love those "Cruise Nights" up here during Spring/Summer and the old tunes. Was divorced in 1998; have 3 kids...one a loving boy with Down Syndrome who lives in a nearby group home and I see regularly. My daughter is in the Coast Guard in Cape Cod, Mass. with her new husband, Jesse (Great guy). and my other son, Connor, lives with me here and recently graduated magna cum laude from Hilbert College here. I'm running a historical website which involves the FBI Agents of the 30's and the Gangster Era. If you get a minute, stop by the site. If you Google "historicalgmen" (without the quotes) you'll find the site link since I guess I can't post the full site link here......more rules! p. s. Hey, that's me on the left in the photo in yellow and my brother "Cappy" on the right when I went to see him in '07 in Fla. I don't get to this Classmates site too often so email me to say hello if you get the chance. A SAD NOTE ON MY BROTHER, "CAP" Well, if you knew my brother "Cap," please be aware that he passed away on the Friday before Father's Day 2014 while living with his girl in the Pocono's. Cap was only 57 years old however suffered over the last 7 years or so with COPD/emphasema which eventually taxed his heart and brought things to an end. I'm gonna miss the guy........I saw him in May when our brother in law died and I spent 2 days with him and his girl before coming back to Buffalo. I had a bad feeling then that that would possibly be the last time I saw him. He was in serious respiratory distress all the time. Here's to ya' Cap to all my friends from days gone by, it's good hearing from you! larry
