Larry's Story

After high school, I went to Suck-Suck U (Southern Colorado State College). I then transferred to Colorado State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Went on a four week History Tour to England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Also went on a one week vacation to Mexico with a friend. Could not get a job in my chosen field, went back to school and got a Certificates in Paralegal Studies, Surveying, and Drafting. Moved back to Colorado Springs and worked as a Paralegal for 1 year. Moved to Denver and worked as a surveyor for 5 years. Moved back to Fort Collins and worked as a surveyor for 1 year. All the business mentioned went out of business. Moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming worked as a Paralegal for a Bank (went out of business) and then worked as a Geographic Information Specialist, using my surveying background, for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Met my wife and I was married in 1993. Karen was working for the BLM as a cartographer using her Masters of Geology from North Carolina State. I got my teaching credentials and taught for one year at East High School in Cheyenne. I also worked with juveniles in a detention center. Most of them had a history of gang violence and drive by shootings. I moved into another field working with Adults with Severe Disabilities in a Day Workshop program. I started my martial arts training in Tae Kwon Do and received my 1st degree Black Belt.. Karen transferred to a job with US Geological Survey so we moved to Central Pennsylvania to Hughesville just outside of Williamsport, the Home of Little League Baseball…we never went to a LL game. I went back to school and got my Masters of Science in Special Education studies. In August 2001, I got a teaching position in ...Expand for more
Maine for teaching high school students in Special Education. September 11, 2001 happened, all government transfers cancelled, with Karen in Pennsylvania and me in Maine. In 2002, Karen quit her government job and moved to Maine and we started building a house in 2005 on 118 acres of land. We made a couple of trips back to Cheyenne and I received my 3rd and 4th degree black belts. I started my own dojo at a Community Center in Maine. And we started building our farm. From 2006 to present, we have had: 6 adult goats, 30 kids from the adults, 3 alpacas, 1 llama, 15 chickens, 3 cats, 5 dogs and several birds. Karen makes and teaches classes for goats’ milk cheese and soap. I retired from teaching and martial arts in 2012 and since then have built a Cobb oven and will be making artisan breads. I am also learning to use my blacksmithing forge and welder and turning bowls on my lathe. In my spare time, I work as an historical interpreter at the Norlands Living History Museum, home of the Washburn family. I have two personas, Hiram Briggs the School Master and John White the Farmers Helper. I am currently learning to drive the two oxen, Poncho and Lefty. Unfortunately, it is more that they are driving me, just like some of my past students, stubborn. Last year Karen and I went to New Brunswick to visit Kings Landing. Our bucket list is to travel as much as possible after Karen retires in 2018. We hope to ride the East Coast bicycle trail. We hope to take our 10-year wedding anniversary trip to Ireland…the one we couldn’t take 15 years ago because we were too busy with life. So many place to see and things to do and so little time to do them….Anyone know where we can get another VW bus? We sold our 1968 VW van and we miss it.
