Lars's Story

After spending 3 years in the Army stationed in Germany I moved back to Kodiak, Alaska for a short stay before returning to Germany to live with a lady I had met while in the Army. We stayed together off and on for 14 years but never married. I worked for the US Government there and finally went to work for a German consturction company. After returning to the states for a couple of years in the late 80's I took a job in Seattle and worked as the forman for a special coatings company. We applied Epoxy based coatings on floors and walls. Little did I know I was poisoning myself while working with the products. I returned to Germany again and married an american lady there in '94. Our daughter was born in '95. I found out 3 months later that I had kidney disease and our world fell apart. I was put on a special diet and had to change jobs. After eating close to nothing for 2 years, and dropping from 220 to 110lbs I finally had to go on dialysis and 3 months later my brother Doug gave me his kidney. The transplant took place in Freiburg, Germany, in the Black Forest. The doctors there were better than excellent. Since I have learned to behave myself and haven't had any complications. Unfortunatley I eventually put all the weight back on but I am fairly healthy. After the transplant I went bacl to college and got a degree in Mechatronics. I met Sabrina there after my marriage fell apart due to stress from the illness. I then went to wor...Expand for more
k for a German textile machinery manufacturer and traveled around the world building textile production lines. I sent most of my time in the Middle East and Europe. Shortly before Georgie sent the troops into Iraq I was in Cairo, Egypt working building a machine. At first they all thought I was German but after I had a visit from an Irish co-worker and we were observed speaking english their attitude towards me changed drastically. One of them recognized my American accent so, luckily for me, they decided not to send my driver the following morning. I am now very happy that somebody didn't send another driver. Two days later I left Egypt and after that I took a new job with the company handling the rebuild and spare part accounts for the US, Canada and the Asian Pacific. I married Sabrina Nov. 13, 2003 in Anchorage, Alaska while visiting my sick father. I eventually landed in Greenville, South Carolina on business and fell in love with the area. I brought my wife on one of my following trips and she too loved it. We were moved here within a year. I now have my own business. I represent ShadeTree Systems a retractable canopy company. I also do renovations on the side so I keep fairly busy. My wife, Sabrina, works here for Bosch Rexroth a German Hydraulic Pump manufacturer. She is a draftsperson and designer and handles the correspondance with Germany. We hope eventually to find and remodel our dream home and live happily ever after.
