Latosha's Story

Life My name is Latosha Angel Reed. Friends call me Tosha, for short. I'm currently a senior Mass Communications student at Jackson State University. Upon graduation I plan on working at one of Jackson's radio or news stations. My ultimate goal is to Host my own talk show that will feature marching bands among other things. I have now one son, Michael, and am engaged to be married. After graduating Port Gibson High School(go Blue Waves), I attended Hinds Community College. There I served as S.G.A. president, among many other clubs and organizations, as well as march in the band and sang in the choir. I got a chance to perform on tour with the Hinds Community College Choir under the direction of Dr. Bobby G. Cooper as well as travel and video tape the renown Utica Jubilee Singers in which my fiance sang with. The Utica experience was a great one. The band was alright too. I then left Hinds and joined R.O.T.C. through Jackson State University. That summer I challenged myself at Basic Training Camp in Fort Knox, KY. There with me was Laquita Finley, Tina Butler, and Liz, all graduates of Hinds Community college. Tina, Liz and I graduated honor platoon(wolverines) of Charlie 146- Infantry. Soon after, I began Band camp at Jackson State, marching Alto Saxophone, and later quit because I found out I was pregnant. Marching in the band and doing Physical Training in R.O.T.C. got pretty hard after a while. Plus, the smell at JSU construction wasn't so sweet either. So then I moved on Alcorn State University Campus. To make a long story short, I left ASU, moved ...Expand for more
to Yazoo City, taught as a substitute teacher, became case manager for the afterschool program and finally came back home to JSU to continue my education. Well, that's a little bit of my life since high school. I guess I'll see everyone at our class reunion. See Ya! Workplace I WORKED FOR HINDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE AS A TUTOR/ RECRUITER FROM 1998-2001. FROM THERE I BECAME A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER AND CASE MANAGER FOR THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM. AS A SUB, I TAUGHT 5TH - 8TH GRADE AND AS A CASE MANAGER I TRACKED STUDENTS GRADES FROM THE PROGRAM AS WELL AS RENDERED REFERAL SERVICES. Military There's really not much to tell. I graduated in an honor platoon. Camp was very interesting. The first few days was in processing. My first road march was to go get equipment (ruck sack, canteens, cavlar, etc.) That day I was caught with out my soft hat on and I had to do push ups, but it was only 10. I loved the rapel tower. Land navigation was a breeze. Physical trainig was kind of hard for me because I guess I was lazy at first and my body had to make a big transformation within a few days. I would advise people to go and experience the discipline and leadership skills they teach as well as tactics and weapon qualifing. I met plenty of people. One of my friends there was a girl by the name of Rodriguez, she was a character; and my battle buddy, Cadet Wilson. She motivated me through out the whole thing. You get to meet people from different parts of the world. The culture experience was awsome. I'm thinking about rejoining R.O.T.C. next semester at JSU. I'll see.
