Laura's Story
Life
My family moved back to the Florida Suncoast in 1979. I was born here in St. Petersburg. My family lived in Lancaster, Ohio for 8 years from 1971 to 1979.
In August 2005 I moved 50 miles south of St. Petersburg to Sarasota with my boyfriend. Our lease is up next month and who knows where I'll be then?! Life is an adventure!
I have 3 kids: a daughter, 23 and a grandson who's almost 5. My twin sons are 18 now.
I work in Graphic Design. I work for BIC Graphic USA (BIC pens). I'm planning on going back to school soon to actually get some formal art training now that all my kids are grown and pretty much on their own. I am definitely not feeling any empty nest syndrome yet!!
School
Biggest crush? I'll never tell. But some of my favorite people were my friends Valerie Hoffman and Cyndi Tufts. Another friend I'll never forget was Eric Brown--I remember our verbal sparring in Mr. Ishido's 8th grade math class (Eric, you NEVER had any notebook paper and were always "borrowing" mine!!) When I left high school to move to Florida, Eric wished me luck. That was wa...Expand for more
y cool since he was one of the hot shot football guys and I was one of the "uncool" people.
The teacher who inspired me the most was Miss Speer in 9th grade at Stanbery (sp?). She taught me that music lyrics are literature. I still have the copy of one of Steely Dan's songs that she passed out to us. I felt like such a nothing in high school. But it was in her class that I realized I COULD become a writer. It was in her class that I learned to look beyond my small world in Lancaster and to dream and believe that seemingly unreachable things WERE possible.
If I could do it over again, I would have finished high school. Even though I eventually got a GED, I missed a lot by not finishing, not just academically, but the socially as well. I made things a lot harder on myself than it would have been otherwise.
College
Good grief, college was hell! I went later in life to St. Petersburg College to get my degree in Business. When I was attending, I had 3 kids, 2 of them infants. I had SEVERAL caffeine-fueled all-nighters. Why did we have to turn in such BORING papers?????
