Laura's Story

After getting married in 1976 and having a child 1977 we moved to NJ, not the best move but there I was. Unfortunately the marriage didn't last so I continued working then I met my second husband several years later (1983). The marriage lasted over 10 years and I have 3 beautiful daughters. To make a long story short, he remarried and then we were divorced, yes in that order. In 2001, I moved to Michigan and the rest of my family soon followed. My Mom in 2002, my Grandmother in 2003, Aunt and Uncle in 2004, my Dad in 2005. It had been great finally having family around. I was fortunate to get a job with the market so scarce, not many opportunities here. I was working as a site manager for the County for a while and also a service provider for the Township. Long hours and stressing me out until I gave up the position as a site manager, my youngest daughter was 4 at the time we moved here and she needed me around more than the County. This is now 2008 and the worst year ever, starting with the passing of my Mom suddenly in January. She was more than a Mom, she was my best friend and a day doesn't go by without me thinking of her. en just as devastating to my daughter who still grieves for her as they were very close as well. Friday morning, my Dad passed away in the Nursing Home here in town, he's been having a rough time fighting penumonia, diabetes and coronary heart failure. A few months ago he mentioned how he couldn't understand why he was still here, all his friends had passed on. I feel guilty that I hadn't spent enough time with him until the days before while he was in the hospital and when he came back to the Nursing Home, I sat by his side holding his hand and trying to comfort him, whether he was aware of my presence I'll never know. He did show some recognition when I visited him in the hospital, he couldn't talk, but the expression on his face told me he knew I was there. We seem to take things for granted and never expect things to turn out the way they do. A day never goes by that I don't tell my youngest daughter I love her, as it always was with my Mom. I just hope my kids will remember me for the good things that happened in their lives. My other girls know they are loved but sometimes it's hard to show it if they're not around all the time.
