Laura Cunningham:

CLASS OF 1971

Laura's Story

LIFE My life after high school has been spent in the bay area - married and divorced twice, no kids, lots of nieces and nephews, tons of friends, two horses, lots of cats and dogs (all spoiled -I'm a big animal lover) good health, a lot of really good times and a few not so good too. But overall no complaints. In a nut shell, I pretty much have spent my whole adult life making a living and working on a career with my days off spent showing or riding horses, water skiing and/or going to college part time. My new/latest passion is travel and I have been doing plenty of that since I retired in April 2008. Talk about an education - this is the way to go!!! There is nothing like an adventure and meeting new people from different cultures. SCHOOL My biggest memories of high school were....the beach, Santa Cruz, Capitola, cutting school to go there and lots of impromptu parties. I had several crushes (you probably have no idea who you are) but no real steady boyfriends. I think I was too independent to be tied down even then. That all came later. I remember hating PE (who wouldn't with swimming 1st period when I already knew how to swim!!!! So much for the makeup and looking good. Why was that necessary?) and having a really nutty typing teacher who was pretty outrageous and not very patient with adolescents. I think the crowning glory in that class was when someone threw a wad of paper up into the light fixture and it started smoldering! Now that was hard to forget! Despite the fact that I was reasonably intelligent and now have an advanced college degree, I remember not being really motivated by anything other than graduating, moving on, becoming independent, starting a life I could call my own and not being treated like a child (you can't wear pants, patent leather shoes, etc. etc.) Remember that??? Despite the fact that all of us grew up in h...Expand for more
istorically tumultous times, probably experimented with a lot of different things (that we don't talk about openly or admit to now) I feel extremely fortunate that I survived my youth unscathed. I find it fascinating that looking back things have really changed. I have attended several Campbell High School reunions and remember being struck by the fact that at several reunions, the so called "wallflower" girls were gorgeous and their "rah, rah" counterparts hadn't fared so well. Same for some of the guys too! Maybe it wasn't the greatest thing in the world to hit your stride in high school huh??? COLLEGE I obtained all of my degrees going to college part time and at night. Since I worked in the public sector almost my entire working career and was 38 when I received my Bachelors and 46 when I recieved my Masters, I opted for an MPA (Masters in Public Administration). If I hadn't gotten on the "paycheck" treadmill I might have made some other choices and gone to college straight through, but I propably would not be where I am now, so no regrets. WORKPLACE As a young person I worked retail (K-Mart), grocery (FRYS/Lucky's), telephone soliciting and for a short time in a factory. I then went to work for Santa Clara County and retired after 33 years in 2008 as a Senior Analyst/Project Manager and also retired from my part time job of 10 years with the East Side Union High School Adult Education Program as an instructor. So thats it in a nutshell. I am now home "project managing" my social life and travel agenda, getting up when I feel like it (truly a luxury),volunteering, and enjoying life to the fullest. No complaints here! Over the years I've stayed in touch with several people from High School and have even worked with a few. But for the most part I've lost touch with most. If anyone remembers me and wants to chat, I'd love to hear from you!
