Laura's Story

I earned my Associate's Degree to accomplish my high school ambition. I realized while I was taking Business cIasses that I really enjoyed assisting my teachers. Hurray for Taunton High School Business Education Department for helping become a star student. I had a big choice to make--2 more years of college to become a Business Teacher like all of those that I admired but with a low starting salary ($19-20k) or apply for one of the top 2 jobs posted at Fisher College in Boston for a much higher salary ($34-37k) which I was assured I would have my pick from. I had a choice of only 2 colleges: Suffolk and Salem. The Director at Salem knew the same business and computer info. as me and much more. That was a fairly easy choice. I got my real estate license when I was 19 and going to college to help pay the bills. I also went from working as an Administrative Assistant to Office Manager to doing commercial real estate including financial analysis for $2-20 million loans. That was pretty exciting considering I wasn't the best Accounting student! I told my parents 'But this is different.' Real estate helped me meet a life-long friend, buy my first new car and my first house which I bought with my big brother Scott Petersen. Unfortunately, I had a nightmare neighbor. My friends said I could write a book with ever...Expand for more
ything that happened. Fortunately I met my soulmate and he was in a band! Figures right! I always went with guys that would sing to me. Within 16 months we were married, bought a house in Avon (where we still live), and I got my first teaching job. Now I've been teaching for 17 years. I have two children who are my pride and joy. My daughter is almost 13 and my son is 9. I am very blessed to have such a wonderful family. Luckily they both love sports like me and my parents who are still living in the same house in Taunton are thrilled with their only two grandchildren. I do water aerobics and have one class with my mom. I've been doing that for 13 years. I used to play women's softball before I had my son, but I still get to the cages once in awhile. I have taken Tai Chi & Chi Gong classes for more than 3 years and highly recommend it for the health benefits and pure peace of mind. The highlight I most recently had bringing back my high school memories was when my mentor and favorite Business teacher, Joe Sikorski, came back to MA from FL, hung out with me for the entire day driving all around Taunton talking about the old days, how much has physically changed in the area, watched the Sox play a game (he's still a fan), and talk shop. I hope I will see many more of you at the 25th reunion in 2011! Peace!
