Laura Espinoza:

CLASS OF 1963

Laura's Story

It doesn't seem like it been over 50 years since I graduated from Brighton. The years have gone so fast. I've kept in touch with very few of my classmates as my life has seemed to move in different directions. I married Jerry Dreiling of Commerce City a week after graduating and moved to Commerce City where we immediately started our family. Three children in four years. A lot of work but so worth it. I still live here in Commerce City. We divorced in 1982 after 19 years of marriage but still remain friends. We always think it's funny that I lived in Brighton and he lived in Commerce City and now he lives in Brighton and I live in Commerce City. We had 3 children, 2 daughters and a son, who have made us the proud grandparents of 6 grandchildren. Almost all children and grandkids live close by. I am so proud of all of them and love them dearly. I was a stay at home mom until my youngest daughter was in the 2nd grade and then I went to work at Monaco Elementary School as a Media Paraprofessional (librarian & resource person). I did this for 8 years. During this time I met my second husband, Joe, who also worked at Monaco. We married in 1983. After 18 great years together, he passed away in 2001. Truly the love of my life. Today I am single and have a full life but wish Joe were here to share it with me. Shortly before Joe passed I started working in the construction business which is what I still do today. I work in the accounting department of a large plumbing company and love it. I don't feel like retir...Expand for more
ing yet and will keep working until my health tells me to slow down. Financially, I can afford to retire comfortably if my health tells me I have to. It's a great feeling to know that I work because I want to and not because I have to. I've had a few health issues but like the rest of us in our age group, have learned to adapt to my limitations and take daily meds (thank goodness for those) to help me out. In addition to working full time, I'm an avid paperback book reader and read at least one a week. Books have been a part of my daily life since I was a young girl. I also enjoy Facebook which one of my daughters got me started on about 3 years ago. Love to play the games that they offer. I'm always looking for other to join me in those games. I have some very close friends that I see and go to dinner and share activities with. Old friends who have known me for many, many years. There is something so comforting about people who have known you when you were younger and know all about your life, your children, your health issues, your family members, etc. All in all I would say I have a good life. I know I'm a senior citizen now but it's sure hard to think of myself as one. I have a saying that pretty much sums me up and it's this: "I hope I am never to old to be silly". Those who really knew me in school, will know that I really haven't changed (except for the extra pounds and silver hair, of course). I still love to to laugh and make others laugh. Good health and happy living to my fellow classmates.
