Laura's Story

I was always going to be a single career woman, like my great aunt but the plan changed. I started by attending Oregon, and then working day jobs in accounting and administration and doing theater at night. I did that for 10 years, then went to PSU to complete my MBA. Who would have thought that I would end up getting my MBA and reconnecting with someone I met in college! Frank and I got married in '97. Frank likes vintage Porsches - we now have 3. That's partly my fault...more on that later. I was working in marketing managememt when Allison was born in January, 1999. I wasn't planning on going back, but 3 weeks into my "retirement" my old boss begged me to come back part time. OK, it worked for a while, but then we started on child #2. After firmly stating that I wasn't coming back, they finally hired someone to take over my accounts - I never met her. Katie was born in August, 2000 and I made an exit from paid employment. I got tired of getting wet loading the girls in and out of carseats - I had to park on the driveway because his first Porsche and his Datsun 280Z HAD to be inside. So in 2004 we embarked on a major addition to our ranch house, creating a 6-car garage in the process. Of course, we had all that empty space, and to forestall all of our friends asking to store stuff in our garage, we aquired 2 more Porsches. One actually runs quite nicely, the other two are in various states of renovation. But there's still room in the garage for another, so if you happen to have a vintage Porsche that you don't want any more..... Allison is your average, happy kid, likes sports and her girlfriends. Her favorite state of being is 90 miles and hour with her hair on fire...Expand for more
and is much more interested in sports and her social life than in scholastics. She'll be entering the 4th grade this year, and looks forward to soccer, volleyball and being on the swim team. When she was 2 yrs old, we found out that Katie is a high function autistic, and I postponed my re-entry into paid employment indefinitely. She is making fantastic progress and we're very optomistic. I've learned a lot about special needs, inclusion and how to work the school system to get the services she needs to succeed. She will be going into the 3rd grade, and one of our big challenges is keeping her interested - she is a sharp cookie, reads at a 5th grade level - and convincing her that she really does need to prove that she knows what she knows -having answered the question to her own satisfaction once, she doesn't see the value of doing it again on a test. She really enjoys creating Simm cities and doing Wii Fit Yoga. Frank is a mechanical engineer currently working for Intel and travels to lots of foreign destinations - this year South America is the hot spot. But all those frequent flyer miles allowed us to do a week in Hawaii for $150 - what a deal! We had such a good time we've decided we're going to rent a house on the windward side for a month during his next sabatical - about 5 years from now. We enjoy going to the Oregon football games (both Oregon marching band alumnus) and the occasional trip to the beach or Clear Lake, as Frank's travel schedule allows. Frank is even trying to coordinate his November trip to Brazil to coincide with the Formula 1 race - what a charge that would be! We just aquired a tent trailer and plan on a lot more camping in the summers to come.
