Laura's Story

Life I earned my M.S. in Library and Information Science from UIUC in 1993. I've been the librarian at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center since 1995. My husband and I have a daughter named Tessa, who was born in 1998. We also have one house rabbit. We still live in Champaign. I hope my old friends remember me as interesting. :-) I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. My favorite way to relax is to curl up somewhere with a good book. It always has been. No surprise that I'm a librarian. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a laptop, internet access, and access to online databases and journals to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero is my dad, although I didn't realize it fully until after he died a few years ago. Through his example, I learned what it meant to have passion for your work. He also taught me that making a difference in people's lives is more important than the money you make. He and my mom also taught me to have the guts to be who I am. lount, because he was the coolest person I knew in high school. The biggest surprise in my life has been being Tessa's mom. It's one thing to think about having kids. It's another to actually do it every day. It's the best thing I've ever done. I've learned everything from being the experience. The best thing Tessa taught me is to like myself just the way I am. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the kitchen and add on a sunroom. My dream home would be uncluttered. None from high school because I run into them around town occasionally anyway. Love talking to Mr. Bauers though. :-) I'd love to see Miss Happel, my third grade teacher from Centennial Lab School in Decatur. She was my favorite elementary school teacher and I still think about her when I read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. If I won $100 million, I'd give a couple million of it to Tessa in a trust, then spend the rest on establishing a foundation, living expenses so Quentin and I could retire, and charitable contributions. My current age is 43. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be old. I was so completely wrong. In my head, I'm a really wise 25 year old.
