Laura's Story

Life We just had our nineteenth wedding anniversary and we have two beautiful, hilarious, brilliant, feisty boys, who keep us running. We have a Bullmastiff and five goats and enjoy raising ring-necked pheasants and quail for release in the wild from time to time. I coach indoor soccer during the Winter, am starting an Ultimate Frisbee team, and we're baseball and soccer fanatics year round. I am a Usui Reiki Master, a certified Karuna Reiki practitioner and intuitive energy healer. I am moving to Vermont in a few years to be a healer, without my husband. Yes, I said "without." We are getting a divorce. College After high school in McMinnville, Oregon, I went to Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, returned to be married, then stayed in the area, taking classes at Linfield College and Portland State University. Workplace My first job was filling in as a legal secretary and receptionist and I've been in the legal field ever since. Remember Miss Volpp, the typing teacher? I have her to thank for my insanely fast typing speed and formatting know-how. Never thought I'd be able to thank her, but saw her a few years ago and did just that. In the past two decades I've been a legal secretary, staff manager, and paralegal. I'm working now for a firm named Bittner & Hahs in Lake Oswego, where I hope I'll be until I leave Oregon. It's wonderful, I'm happy, I love whom I work with and what I do. It's a really great place...Expand for more
to be. On top of all that, it's 11 minutes from my house and I can get my kids to school and sports events quickly and easily. It just doesn't get better than that. I guess my biggest surprise about my life is that I stayed in the same career field. I always wanted to do something different, just didn't know what. One of my favorite ways to chill out is to sit on the deck swing with a cup of something warm in the Winter and cold in the Summer and either read, write a snail mail letter, watch the birds, or just listen to the Earth breathing. Kids - what have you learned from your kids? I have learned to laugh at everything, most especially myself, and to be proud of what I do and who I am. I'm 41. I used to think that people who were 41 were middle age. Now I'm thinking that 60 sounds better as middle aged. My best friend would tell you I'm a wonderful friend, always positive, choosing to believe the best in all people, cheerful and energetic with a great sense of humor. People who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet and private. Yes, I still pretty much dress like I did 20 years ago. It's a classic style and the clothes are comfortable - why change? I don't wear quite as much navy anymore, though. In 10 years, I hope to still be happy with myself. I'm going to get there by following what feels right, changing career fields from the law to energy work, and moving across the country.
