Laura's Story

I left Fresno immediately upon graduation and went to Southern California. Through a series of interactions I found myself working for Avis Rent a Car. By 19 years of age, I was a Manager, and was soon promoted again to a field position, Managing SFO airport. That was way back in the 70's. The gas crisis hit and Avis had massive layoffs - I was one of them. So there I was, living in San Jose, and unemployed. I took a job with a small travel agency only to "help them out". They too, had to shut their doors as the economy was not very good. The owner made specific efforts to see that I has hired by another agency in town. I soon found myself working with the Santa Clara athletic team movements, doing Industry forums, and working with the owners to launch a very successful tour company called Classic Vacations. I can easily say that my gounding for business ethics, came from that small beginning. Soon a headhunter called me, and wanted me to Manage a Global Travel Agency - Thomas Cook Travel. We are still in the mid to late 70's. By 1980, Travel Agencies were re-inventing themselves, there were retail and corporate agencies, and speciality agencies that handled incentive and group travel. By this time I had managed every facet of the business and I was asked to open up large business call centers, group operations centers and accounting centers. Actually, I had the distinct pleasure of being one of only 2 women Managers in the US. This was a British based company - well behind the US in breaking down the glass ceiling. In 1982 I married Larry. He is well grounded and has an adventuresome spirit. His company soon transferred him to Southern California, and as luck would have it, Thomas Cook asked me to duplicate my Northern California efforts, and open up the Southern California Market. Soon, I was leading over 400...Expand for more
employees, and had full responsibility for a 300 million dollar business. Thomas Cook went through a series of acquisitions. The company was purchased by Dun & Bradstreet, Maxwell Enterprises, Crimson, and the last, in 1995 was American Express. I survived all of that, which in itself is a feat, since most know the acquired employees are usually let go. After 9/11, the economics of the business took a huge downward blow. We began a process of closing offices, laying off people, and sending operations to low cost areas. There was no greater stress than impacting the lives of nearly 400 people, many of whom I had personally hired and mentored through their careers. The process went through 2003, and since all the people were laid off, all the real estate closed down, the next person out of a job was me. I was fortunate to stay on, doing project work, but that too came to an end in March 2008. It was a 30 year career that I never planned to have. So now on to the next transition in life. What I can say is that my next job will be focused on companies with moral character, and it will be all about just doing a good job. I have already had a great job. My skill set is leadership based, and customer centric. I do my networking through linkedin which is a great place to find and connect with people. I can get communication through yahoo at lspears0518. During these years, my husband and I enjoyed travelling. He has 3 grown boys from his previous marriage. We have no children of our own. He is retired, and for now I guess I am too. I am additionally lucky because my mother is still with us. She moved from Fresno to Southern California in the mid 80's to be near my sister and I. Most might remember that I have a twin sister. She too lives in Southern California. Would love to reconnect... Laura Spears
