Laura's Story

Life After graduation, I attended Barry University in Miami Shores, FL. I studied poli-sci and English (somebody had to) and after graduation, I decided it might be fun to join the Marine Corps. I was right, it was fun. I was stationed at Little Creek Naval Base for some training, and Camp Lejeune, NC where I was with the 8th Motor Transport Battalion. And even though I made many requests, I never got to go anywhere - frustrating!! I opted to leave the Corps when my daughter was born - who is now 15, believe it or not! That was a tough decision, but really the best one for us both. I lived in South Florida for 9 years - where I worked for Circuit City for four years, a yacht company for four years and a local WB affiliate TV station for a year. I met and married my hubby (a.k.a. Mr. Wonderful!) in 2004 and am now in Texas (which I actually really like a lot). Our son was born in October 2005 - he's so awesome! (12 years in between kids is kinda crazy - it's like having a first all over again). I've been a stay-at-home mom for the past 4 years; and after working & being a single mom for 9 years - it's been a wonderful experience. I'm so blessed to be able to spend this time with my children & focus on my family. School I always laugh when I talk to people who went to big schools - or were military brats (like my husband) who went to several different schools - because I can still name so many of the people I went to school with (from kindergarden to gradutation) without a whole lot of effort - even today. I'm not even sure why - because I've bee...Expand for more
n so far removed from them & NY for so long. But, 12 years is a long time and lots of memories (good and bad) have left an impression, I suppose. I really like that I was fortunate to go to the same school with the same people - it made the experience special for me. I'm also really bad at staying in touch - life is just so busy - but I do miss my friends from back then - whether they know it or believe it!! College When you attend college in South Florida - you find yourself scheduling your classes around the sun. At least I did my freshman year! Barry University is a small, private, catholic university - which caused this Babylonian to become quite creative in getting passed the "dry campus" rules. Wasn't really all that hard. For me, I think college was more about life lessons than actual tradition book learning (though there was a lot of that, too). I learned a lot about myself, others, just how much I didn't know and from a lot of mistakes. I'm thankful for that time in my life. Military What can I say about Marine Corps boot camp? Let's just say it's one of those "had to be there" kinda things. So much happens in those "magical" 13 weeks - I could go on and on - but I won't. It was an experience I would never trade - and would do again - but am really glad I don't have to!! Living in a military town brings back many memories - but it's an Army town, and, let's face it, it's just not the same. I did go back to Parris Island for a visit for the first time since I graduated in Feb. '08 - and all I can say is that it was surreal. Semper Fi.
