Laura's Story
Once I got married, my husband and I moved to Opelika. He finished out his last quarter at Auburn University and I worked in Montgomery as a restaurant manager for Sbarro in Eastdale Mall. Once he graduated, he was sent to Rhode Island for Officer Candidate School for 4 months and I moved back home.
The following January, I transfered from Montgomery to Orlando, Florida and he was stationed at the Naval base there. We lived near the Orlando International Airport and I loved it. Until the hurricane came. That was my first but it wouldn't be my last. We were there for 6 months.
Then we moved to Charleston, South Carolina. Actually we lived in Summerville, but everyone knows about Charleston. I took time off from work. We lived there for 6 months and through 2 more hurricanes. I was starting to get used to...Expand for more
them. Then we moved again.
This time we moved up north to Groton, Connecticut. We were there for 3 months. Again, I took time off and another naval wife and I spent that time cruising the coast and shopping. Did you know you can drive all the way through Rhode Island in 90 minutes? That was cool. I also learned real quick how to drive in the snow. I always thought the term up hill both ways and in the snow was made up by our parents but it is possible to have to travel uphill in the snow to get out of our apartment building. One way streets in either direction and one way in one way out with your destination on a hill in the middle. That is up hill both ways. Oh yeah, we got snowed in on the base for three days.
First perminent duty station, Norfolk, Virginia. Loved it there. Lived there about 5 years
