Laura's Story

Life I moved to Huntington Beach after school and married my trainer husband. Ten years and two boys later I found myself up here in wine country and married again and had a daughter. They are now 18, 16 and 9. Getting married is a lot like eating Kentucky fried chicken to me...sounds like a tasty idea before you do it and it's even good at first, then I remember how bad I felt last time I did it and why I was never going to do THAT again. I've been single for the last five years (If anyone with three kids two dogs and two roommates can feel single)and I like it that way. I own the first and only professional tattoo studio here and am celebrating my 10 year anniversary as the Tattoo Lady at Flying Colors Tattoo. I work 7 days of most weeks because this is what I would be doing for fun after work if I had a job. (eeeek!) (UPDATE 3/08: I MARRIED THE BEST MAN EVER IN 2006 AND AM CELEBRATING 16 YEARS IN BUSINESS THIS YEAR!) I'm very colorful, which is easier to say than it is to try to count my tattoos...I guess I have one big one that doesn't meet in the middle yet! A few piercings and some blue hair...you get the picture, I blend right in anywhere. I can only imagine what it would have been like if I had known about all this stuff back in school, I could have had pink hair instead of trying to blow it into a Farrah Fawcett haircut! As it is I'm probably lucky I didn't discover the joys of exterior decorating as a teenager-I'd have no blank canvas left. I was pregnant with my girl when I opened this shop, and since she's been here from the beginning she loves t...Expand for more
o be my shop girl and answer the phone etc. All three like to hang out here...It's my favorite place to be! School I hated school, and it hated me right back. My best friend was and is Karen Foy, who I talk to a few times a week. I was also friends with Danny Reed. My house was where we could all party because Dottie (my mother) was down to party with us and try to be one of us. Jamie Little and Ron Pope were my neighbors. If they had had a category called "Least likely to be remembered" in the yearbook (which I was only in as a freshman in 1975) I would have been voted in for sure! Workplace I was a telephone operator for two years...a waitress, bartender, pastry baker, American Sign Language interpreter (mainstreaming Deaf students at the high school level.) That was a funny one! I not only had to do freshman social science again, but my worker-evaluation was based on not only paying attention myself but getting the information to my students so they would get good grades...talk about the revenge of the universe! I only lasted two years because my "empathy level" was too high, and I was "obviously unable to take non-verbal cues as to appropriate dress and demeanor" I finally had my dream come true and found an apprenticeship with a local tattoo artist and did my first tattoo on my birthday (2/8/91) and have done only this since then. I look at my life sometimes and think wow, this IS who I wanted to be when I grow up! (I'm ahead of schedule though, still waiting to grow up) My official titles are: Tattoo Lady, Her Majesty your Mother, exterior decorator.
