Laura's Story

Life I have two chihuahua puppies, April and Gizmo. I've lived in Chicago (undergrad school), Los Angeles (my doctorate), Boston (career/law school), Bangor, ME (summer detour), and, now, Durham, NC (career). By career, I am a political scientist (Duke), but I tend to get involved in the community a lot. I run a large non-profit; I teach political science, gender studies, and law; and I am a research affiliate at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. I am an officer in the International Studies Association, and have a number of research affiliations. School Wow, that was a long time ago. I was not as social in high school as I am now . . . I'll take a shot at it anyway. People I owe, big time: Dr. Roberts, substitute extraordinaire, who put in my head the idea that I could have a Ph.D.; Lucia Harvilchuck, who taught me that I could think; Johnnie Odom, who always made me laugh even when I wasn't sure I would survive the next week . . . and all the brilliant people I went to school with who challenged me to be better than I was . . . As per crushes, no secret that I was crazy about Daniel Hansen (who is now married, and has a child). Also no secret that I had a crush on Lloyd Taylor (who, I believe, is now doing something related to the church as a career). I suppose more secret that I had a crush on Robert Blue (who is gay). Maybe secret that I made (and lost) a bet about...Expand for more
a certain assistant debate coach, Matt Kuss. Perhaps most secret that my biggest crush was on a woman. But no more than that . . . Would I do it again? Parts of it, of course - I wouldn't do the mean things, I would do the nice things. I guess that I would be less afraid of my classmates and my life. But that would have required changing the years before it. College BA University of Chicago PhD University of Southern California JD Boston College Workplace um, where to start? hobby career: establishing debate teams in urban high schools - currently, co-coordinator and chair of the board, boston debate league other hobby career: brief stints to pay for grad school and law school selling cars and managing car dealerships, specifically, volvos and jaguars third hobby career: lawyer real career: political scientist Ph.D., the University of Southern California teaching jobs: Brandeis University, Tufts University, Duke University, Merrimack College research jobs: University of California, Harvard University, University of Southern California, Duke University first book: Gender, Justice, and the Wars in Iraq (Rowman and Littlefield: 2006) second book: women's violence in global politics: mothers, monsters, and whores (Zed: 2007) with Caron Gentry third book: women and war: contested histories, uncertain futures (Polity: 2008) with Carol Cohn several articles . . .
