Laura's Story
Life
I have two chihuahua puppies, April and Gizmo. I've lived in Chicago (undergrad school), Los Angeles (my doctorate), Boston (career/law school), Bangor, ME (summer detour), and, now, Durham, NC (career). By career, I am a political scientist (Duke), but I tend to get involved in the community a lot. I run a large non-profit; I teach political science, gender studies, and law; and I am a research affiliate at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. I am an officer in the International Studies Association, and have a number of research affiliations.
School
Wow, that was a long time ago. I was not as social in high school as I am now . . . I'll take a shot at it anyway.
People I owe, big time: Dr. Roberts, substitute extraordinaire, who put in my head the idea that I could have a Ph.D.; Lucia Harvilchuck, who taught me that I could think; Johnnie Odom, who always made me laugh even when I wasn't sure I would survive the next week . . . and all the brilliant people I went to school with who challenged me to be better than I was . . .
As per crushes, no secret that I was crazy about Daniel Hansen (who is now married, and has a child). Also no secret that I had a crush on Lloyd Taylor (who, I believe, is now doing something related to the church as a career). I suppose more secret that I had a crush on Robert Blue (who is gay). Maybe secret that I made (and lost) a bet about...Expand for more
a certain assistant debate coach, Matt Kuss. Perhaps most secret that my biggest crush was on a woman. But no more than that . . .
Would I do it again? Parts of it, of course - I wouldn't do the mean things, I would do the nice things. I guess that I would be less afraid of my classmates and my life. But that would have required changing the years before it.
