Lauralyn's Story

In a nutshell, this is my life right now: Married 30 years to Kemon Kontis who is of mostly Greek heritage. Ever see that movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"? That is the Kontis family. We watch that movie and laugh our heads off. We are all whacky but fun. Lots of love and everyone sticks together and is there for you. On vacation, we take our 5th wheel trailer and go camping. Usually have two dogs with us. At least once a year, the four Maroney siblings try to get together for a campout. Many times it is just me and my two younger brothers who still live in Ventura County, only a 2 hour drive for me. Summer 2013, Pauline is actually going to be able to come south to be with us. My three kids are all still living at home: Maddy, born preemie in 1987, graduated 2009 from Stephens College in Columbia, MO with BA in Theatre Arts and minor in Music. Won't stop singing and dancing. Hard to get acting roles when you sing soprano but are a big woman. 5' 11". Luke, born 1990, graduated high school 2008 after 11th grade, and is learning landscaping thru one of those sheltered workshops that work with disabled people. He has autism but is not mentally retarded. Takes him a moment to process what you say and then get his answer out which makes people think he is mentally slow. Doesn't socialize unless he gets to know you. He is 6'8" and 230 lbs. Jeff, born 1992. He has the unusual combination of Bipolar Disorder and Asperger's Syndrome (autism without mental retardation AND without the l...Expand for more
anguage delay that his brother has). All his emotions are intense. He graduated from high school after 2 1/2 years. Jeff is 6'8" and 260 lbs. Me: Got Multiple Subject teaching credential in 1985 from California State University Northridge. Taught First Grade for one year. Got pregnant with Maddy at the end of that year. Took maternity leave in the middle of the second year of teaching and did not go back for 12 years. 1987-1999 I was stay-at-home Mom. Went back to teaching but had to get a "Special Education Specialist- Moderate/Severe" credential (2001) and decided while I was at it, I would get a Masters in Special Education (2007). I am just an over-achiever, I guess. I worked for the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) for two years 1999-2001. Then the Lancaster School District took over the class I was teaching. LACOE was educating the most severely disabled children until the local districts felt ready to do so. I spent 10 years (1999-2009) teaching Severely handicapped students at a middle school. Students 12 to 14 years old (6th, 7th, 8th grades) with mental functioning anywhere from 3 to 7 years old. In 2009, I moved to a Special Education Center. The students have mental functioning at less than 2 years old and some have physical disabilities. 2012-2013 school year, I have 10 students, all in wheelchairs, 6 are blind, only 4 eat by mouth. Six students have feeding tubes directly into their stomachs. I am assisted by 4 teacher aides and a nurse (LVN).
