Laurel's Story
Life
We had a FABULOUS 35th Reunion this August! It was the best experience I'd ever had, whether cuz I'd served on our great committee all year, or hadn't been since the 20th, or have a new appreciation for folx's life wisdom & spirit as the yrs go by. I'd sure encourage all y'all to come next time, serve on the committee, consider having a collective yrs' one, like all the yrs we were at VHS (68-71). Mike Disney worked from GA, I from Sacramento area & several others from Vista area & afar. The more local help, the better ;-).
It's weird to try to encapsulate 35 yrs online but I tried. I hope at the next reunion I won't be recovering from multiple surgeries so I can dance to our cool ol' music. Steve Arredondo & the DJ & Mike D did a super job, as did Caryn Meyette & Pat/Trish Bacon McWilliams singing. Mitchell Harmon, 1 of our many twins, donated tons of his art. Polly Schmidt rounded up so many free gifts/prizes. The whole committee was super!
A few pounds more & some grey hair, but I think we help up pretty fine! I've tried rather hard not to be a "groan-up." Spent a lot of my years in education, so I think that has helped me stay young, plus having my 18 year old daughter call me her best friend. I'm convinced that silliness is the secret of life. I've had a lot of heavy stuff happen in my life, & wouldn't've gotten thru it w/o a sense of humor & the support of my family & friends.
After VHS, I lived all over the L.A. & San Fernando Valley area & Seattle, eager to get out of small town Vista, yet ended up eventually dying to get back to a small town - go figure. Loved my college, Occidental; & Pacific Oaks for M.A. in Human Development (basically Educ'l Psych) & 2 teaching credentials. My maiden voyage in teaching was Watts, then Inglewood, teaching bilingually - quite the experience! Ran the extreme to a private school in central Massachusetts, where we fled after the '94 Northridge earthquake, from which we were 1 zip code away - significant phys...Expand for more
ical & emotional damage.
After 24 yrs in L.A., the love affair definitely wore off, even aside from 1 too many EQs! Made a 180 degree change by moving to Holden, Mass., a teeny town from the 1600s! It was a blast at first: only 2 old yellow traffic lights strung up; you'd run into someone you knew everywhere you went. The seasons were a glorious change after SoCal. We Calif. kids had 139" of snow our 1st yr! New Englanders are WAY more reserved than us wild Californians, so it was hard to make friends at first, but we did make some fabulous ones eventually, whom we sorely miss. After doing the stay-at-home-Mommy til my Melanie Rose was 10, I went back to teaching again (having made forays into other areas too) - 1st at the private school, then at the pioneering Multiple Intelligences School in Worcester, the 2nd biggest city in the 6 New England states after Boston. Also took yrs of art classes at The Worcester Art Museum which was 1 of the most fun & empowering things I've ever done - even had 2 paintings hang there in a student exhibition!
That last job at the Mass. inner-city school was such a great job - a wonderful fluke! I visited there cuz I'd read about them & thought it sounded SO awesome. The Outreach Coordinator toured me around & ended up offering me her job! I had NO clue how to do it, plus I'd never even sent an e-mail, but learned the job & computer on the fly! Alas, the sad & incredibly ironic ending was that on my way home from work to bake my daughter a birthday cake & wrap her gifts, I was stopped behind HER schoolbus which drove into me twice - yup, you read right. Had a horrible lawsuit, still having various therapies 4 brain/spine injuries, & massive "Frankenstein" neurosurgeries, BUT have learned that no matter how much you lose in life, if you have the trite but essential basics of love & support of family & friends, & a positive outlook, you can prevail over anything!
Lovers of Peace, Seekers of Fun, We are the class of '71!
