Laurene's Story
The past 50 years have gone by too quickly, and it seem like it's time to put on the brakes and enjoy every day. I liked school, enjoyed most all my teachers at Hoover, and the best part was the lifelong friends who are still a part of my life.
I left for Alaska during those days like the Canned Heat song, "Going up the Country" little did I know it would become forever. I married a local guy, had 3 kids, finished an education degree and spend 25 years as a teacher and school librarian. I got into audio and video recording early on, and hosted a weekly rock n roll show on our Public Radio station in Kodiak.
Returned to San Jose State and Fresno for awhile to care for my mom in our home on 6th Street, and earned a degree in Library Science. Worked at UCMerced & Reedley College for a few years, and after mom passed on, fixed up the...Expand for more
old home, sold it and moved back to AK. (that's the last 10 years in a nutshell)
I have 2 grandkids, both boys, one's 14 and lives at my house, ones 2 and lives with his parents. Still married to the same guy and still enjoying life. Now I'm the director of the Kodiak Public Library, learning to be a municipal employee, so different from the school district. Still hosting a radio show, but now it's called Rural Electric, where I play anything from Merle Haggard and the Allman Bros to Keb Mo and Marcus King Band.
I try to travel out of AK as much as possible during the winter, hoping to see Costa Rica and New Zealand soon; summers find me here as it's beautiful, and I've taken up playing golf again. I run an Air BnB with a lovely view and close to town. Stop by Kodiak if you're in the area, would love to show you our island home.
