Laura's Story

Aah, Life is Great. I'm in my sixth incarnation of sorts, and my life becomes more amazing with each change! Incarnation One: Took accounting in college--Connecticut College in New London, to be exact. To augment my almost entirely liberal arts curriculum I took a year-long accounting course and soon found myself tutoring my classmates in credits, debits and the like. It seemed a shoo-in. So I entered accounting profession and immediately became bored to death. Tried working for a second company in the same field. Still bored. My first incarnation lasted all of six months! Incarnation Two: Since childhood I'd wanted to be a writer. Thought working in Public Relations field might open some doors for me. Worked for a well-known PR firm in DC and simultaneouslyl worked toward a masters in PR. Loved the energy and the excitement of my career; and the richness of DC life was incredible. But I discovered that PR is about manipulating perceptions. One can pay "an expert" in almost any field, to say anything. Not for me. Met a lot of interesting folks, though--one of whom is still a great friend. My second incarnation occupied a year and a half. Incarnation Three: Took a more direct approach to pursue my goal to write professionally. Took a job as copy editor for a children's textbook company in Northern VA. Soon worked my way up to series editor. Learned lots; most of it still useful. Loved my work. But it wasn't "writing." Worse part was the incredible workload. I burned ou...Expand for more
t. My editing career spanned a whopping 2.5 years. Incarnation Four: I became a free-lance writer. Wrote for businesses that needed in-house publishing and couldn't afford a staff writer. Living in DC area and knowing many folks I quicly had more clients than time. I loved the freedom to set my own schedule, etc. Even found time to teach aerobics. Eventually got bogged down though, in the paperwork, recordkeeping, the need to be a bill collector, etc. Missed the old days when the company I worked for handled all this for me. Was a freelance writer for a whopping three years! Incarnation Five: Advertisting Executive!! I was saved from the textbook business when a local magazine editor for whom I'd freelanced tapped me to sell advertising for his magazine. I loved advertising most of all my careers. Went from the magazine to a weekly rag -- ie City Paper, same ilk as the Village Voice. After a few years was tapped to work for The Washington Post newspaper. This was my greatest job so far; every day unpredictable, full of growth and challenge. TWP was and still is a great company. So, why, after several years, wasn't I truly happy? My advertising stint lasted 11 years. Then I was saved again. Incarnation Six--Sorry, but for now you'll have to guess. There are a couple of clues in my profile though, and here are more: I need to visit someone who's been ill -- and then practice playing my guitar. Please check back soon for the rest of the story. Love and blessings! Laura
