Laurie's Story

After graduating from Mitchell, I went to CU Boulder. I was in a sorority there, Alpha Chi Omega and graduated in 1983 with a biochemistry degree. I was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Air Force and was stationed in Sunnyvale, CA in the San Francisco bay area where I worked in the satellite field. After being told that my next assignment was to be Los Angeles, I decided to get out so that I could stay in the bay area. lization and 5 more months of therapy, I was retired from the Air Force and I went to work for IBM, doing more satellite work! I met and married an Air Force officer while in Sunnyvale who helped me decide to change my career to respiratory therapy. We then moved to VA and after 3 years there were sent back to Colorado Springs. We have 2 children: a teenage girl that goes to St. Mary's and an 11 year old boy that attends Divine Redeemer. Oh, by the way, I was only paralyzed for a few months due to swelling on my spinal cord, not spinal cord injury, which is what happened to Christopher Reeves.
