Laurie's Story
Right after graduation I went to Ocean City for a wild beach week with my best friends. I attended UMCP beginning in the fall of 1978, and then transferred to Frostburg State College in 1981. I graduated with my Bachelor¿s degree in 1983 and hit the road with George Orvis, a beau from college. We spent two fun months traveling to the west coast, decided L.A. was too expensive (not to mention CRAZY) and settled in Flagstaff, Arizona. An hour¿s drive from the Grand Canyon, it was a great place to live. In 1984 we both joined the Peace Corps ¿ George to Zaire and I to Liberia (after declining an assignment in North Yemen!). I was a high school English teacher in Greenville, Liberia from 1985 ¿ 1987. In Greenville I met Mohamed Camara, a man I would later marry. After my initial assignment ended, I continued to work for the Peace Corps as a trainer for new volunteers. Then I moved to Conakry, Guinea where Mohamed¿s family lived, and I got a job teaching English at the International school there. I also wor...Expand for more
ked for the USIS as an English teacher, teaching English to Guinean government officials. In 1988 I married Mohamed and later that year we moved to Maryland. Initially I worked as an ESL teacher for the adult education program of Prince George¿s County Public Schools, but then was hired to teach ESL at the high school level. Mohamed and I had a son, Evan Camara, in 1990, but Mohamed and I divorced in 1993. I worked as an ESL teacher at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville for 16 years and have been at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt since 2006. Interestingly, while teaching at Northwestern I worked with a vice-principal, Charles Ross, a man who had been my 10th grade algebra teacher when I was a student at Parkdale in the ¿70¿s! My son Evan and I have lived in Greenbelt since 1993. Evan graduated from St. Anselm¿s Abbey School in Washington, D.C. last June, and he just completed his first year at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. I love my family, my job, and living in Greenbelt.
