Laurie's Story

April 2012--Life for me has been chaos since Feb. when my Dad (my stepdad for 40 years who adopted my sister and I last July) was diagnosed with Stage 3 Pancreatic Cancer..he just turned 72 and was one of the healthiest active people I know..it was such a shock..He is my Mom's caregiver..she has Macular Degeneration and Emphysema...Our family was definitely broadsided with this but we are strong and we will get through it..He has had numerous complications, the latest being liver failure so we are now moving to the Hospice aspect of it. I feel totally helpless..when I was a medic I had tools and protocols that I could use to save someone's life..it might not have always worked but I at least I knew I had done something...with this there is nothing I can to do to fix it...all I can do is take care of him the best I can and help my Mom... I do have something awesome to look forward to in my life though...My daughter Meghan is pregnant with twins...Boys, we just found out today...the poor girl is going to have 4 boys under the age of four..I have been calling her MegaMom...So far everything is going well and they both appear to be healthy and strong..and Meg is actually feeling pretty good herself..so that is life for me in a nutshell at the momen...Expand for more
t... Jan 14,2013..Lots of things have happend since I updated this last. My Dad died May 8, 2012 and my Mom died 7 weeks later on July 1, 2012. Then Sept 3 my Mother In Law died and she was an amazing woman and it was like losing another Mother. Somehow, my sister and I are making it through all this together. My beautiful daughter, Meghan, delivered her happy and healthy twin boys, Colton and Ashton on August 28th. My four grandsons are definitely helping me get through this hard. Recently another huge hurdle has been thrown into our already chaotic life. I have two tumors in my right kidney. 99% probability they are renal cell carcinoma. A bad cancer to have but it is especially bad for me since I already had it in 2002 and only have my right kidney..my left was removed then because of the cancer...on a positive note treatments have advanced since 2002 and there is possibly a surgical proceedure they can try and maybe be able to remove the tumors and hopefully the kidney will function normally after it heals...so right now we are at a crossroad and checking into that surgical procedure...I have my fingers crossed really hard...but I am a true believer in whatever happens is supposed to happen and I will be okay no matter which way things go...
