LaVern's Story

After high school, I pursued my career desire to become a police officer. I became a Police Cadet with the KCKsPD in July, 1973. I became an officer there in May, 1976. My true desire was to become a State Trooper. I received that opportunity in June, 1978. As a Trooper, I was stationed in Wyandotte and Southern Leavenworth Counties. I loved it!!! I met my wife, Barbara, through the Highway Patrol, where she was an administrative assistant in the Olathe office. We were married in January, 1981. My son, Bryan was born in January, 1982. At least, we got the order of business correct even if it was a little quick.......... Raising a family and trying to establish a home on a single State employee income was tough. For those reasons, I left the Highway Patrol and went to work for United Parcel Service in October, 1983. UPS was a GREAT place to work but it wasn't all that friendly to the family. I was promoted very quickly, March, 1984, as a supervisor in Loss Prevention. I was responsible for the Kansas District except for Kansas City and Lenexa. I lived out of a suitcase for two years only to be home on weekends. Career-wise UPS was very good to me. I was promoted to a Manager and was being "fast tracked" for Staff Management. I actually turned down a promotion opportunity to help open up the Americas (Carribean Islands, South American, and territories in that area). It sounded like a super opportunity unitl I learned my family would be relocated to South Florida and I would be back in the states one week out of a month. That didn't go over well on the home front. I worked in the Corporate office in Greenwich, CT for six months, in the West Regon Office in Omaha for six months, went on a special assignment undercover in Baton Rouge for two months and came back to the Kansas District. After spending 14 months away from home, I needed to settle down. We had relocated to Olathe in the meantime. We really liked the area and weren't real eager to leave it. I was being prepped for another shot at promotion with UPS. Barbara and I had a real heart-to-heart where she confided that she did...Expand for more
not want to relocate from this area. Hence, I left the business. That's what brought me to Olathe PD. I started as a dispatcher in July, 1994. I transferred to Patrol in January, '95. I became one of our first School Resource Officers in August, '96, and was assigned to Olathe East High School. This was by far the best duty I ever pulled in law enforcement. I promoted to Sergeant in June, '99 and was assigned to Patrol. I became the SRO Unit supervisor in 2001 and stayed there until I was promoted to a Lieutenant and assigned to Patrol in 2005. I retired April 1, 2008 as a Lieutenant. After retiring from the Olathe Police Department, I had the opportunity to become the Manager of Safety and Security for the Olathe Public Schools. I assumed responsibility for establishing and overseeing all crisis management mitigation processes for the District. I retired from the Olathe Public Schools in September, 2015. I became the Director of Alcohol Beverage Control for the State of Kansas, managed the private security account at Burns & McDonnell World Headquarters and was the Director of Safety and Security at the Kansas City Art Institute. These were all interim positions that I held based on my experience. I am now retired but drive a school bus part time for the Olathe Public Schools. It gives me something to do and still affords me an opportunity to provide for the safety of young people. Barbara has now retired from the City of Olathe Municipal Services and we are planning to fully retire very soon. Bryan currently owns his own home in Gardner and works for DH Pace in Olathe. As you can tell by my photos, I am a “car guy.” I own and show a 2001 Mustang SVT Cobra that I am very proud of. I’m keeping it pretty much pristine for shows and will hand it over to Bryan some day. I know this was a little windy but it pretty much sums up what I've done since high school. I've genuinely enjoyed life and acheived my goals in law enforcement. I only wish the State's pay were a little better. I really missed being a State Trooper. I guess it was the big hat and fast cars or something.............LV

We just completed our daily bike ride. We’ve worked up to riding the Indian Creek Trail from 159th street to 126th and Pflum. We’ll set a new goal in the near future. We REALLY enjoy our e-bikes….🚴🏾

I am regularly asked, “why are you driving a school bus?” This is an example of why. One of my students made and erected this sign for me yesterday to celebrate National School Bus Driver Recognition Day. This was VERY C
