LaVerne's Story
Life
I got married the day after I completed the 10th grade of school in 1955, to Bailey Holman from Celina, TN. He was in the Navy and we moved to Foley, AL. In June 1956 I had a son, Bruce D. Holman. Bailey left the Navy and after Bruce was born joined the Air Force. We were stationed at Moody AFB in Valdosta, GA; Alconbury, England, and Eglin AFB, FL. We were divorced in 1963. I returned to Seminole County in 1964. I was married in between but nothing seemed to work until I married Bill Cherry February 20, 1980.
I began working as an aide at Seminole Memorial Hospital in 1965. Attended nursing school in Albany, GA in 1968-69. Became the first nurse in Seminole County to become an EMT in 1978. Attended Bainbridge College from 1992-1997 on a part-time basis to receive an associates degree in Computer Science. I began working at what was then Great Southern Paper Company in 1974. I left and moved to FL in 1975. I returned in 1976 and worked at the local hospitals while still working part time at the paper mill. In 1979 I returned full time to the paper mill and retired in 1996. In the meantime Great Southern was taken over by Georgia-Pacifi...Expand for more
c. Since my retirement I have enjoyed working with the local ambulance service, was the secretary for the Presbyterian Church for a while and continue to help out with the local EMS when needed.
I lost my husband, Bill Cherry on October 27, 2000. Bill had suffered from end stage COPD for the past two years. He had survived two aneurysms and quadruple by-pass surgery. He had been disabled since his first aneurysm in May 1990.
I am now raising Bill's grandchildren.. I got all five of his son's children on April 9, 2005, my son and daughter in law took the oldest son in January 2006. In July 2006 I allowed the two older I still had to become foster children and I have continued to keep the two younger ones.. They are now 13 and 14years old. I lost my 93 year old aunt on March 1, 2012 and I lost my mom in May of 2010 at age 88.. In 2009 Bill's son and his wife retained custody of the three older children.. I allow the two younger ones to visit them but I still have full custody of them.
Since Bill's death I have traveled some and resumed bowling, a sport I enjoy very much. Still finding time to bowl twice a week.. Present average around 150.
